Manasquan H.S. Girls Hoops Coach Resigns

Felix Romero steps down barely a month after championship season

Manasquan High School Girls Basketball Coach Felix Romero resigned from his post Saturday, the APP's Josh Newman tweeted over the weekend.

Romero led the Lady Warriors to their first-ever state title last month and follows assistant coach Tom Flaherty,  in January, out the door.

Romero could not be reached for comment Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

High School Athletic Director Ronald Kornegay, reached by telephone Tuesday, declined to comment.

Calls to Schools Superintendent Geraldine Margin were not returned Monday. Margin's secretary said the superintendent was not immediately available Tuesday afternoon.

School Board President Michelle LaSala said that by law she could not comment on personnel matters regarding the district.

Both Romero and Flaherty helped turn the girls program into a basketball powerhouse when they took over three years ago.

Flaherty, who according to officials was released due to "administrative" reasons, was not given an explanation until nearly a month after his termination.

The district, however, mailed Flaherty a letter shortly after his release, accusing the coach of holding illegal practices with players, Flaherty has said.

Patch will provide updates as they develop.

kornegay will not respond to Patch inquiries because he is like a cockroach that only comes out at night. He has hired and fired more people for this position than any other program in the area. Maybe, just maybe, someone with a brain at the School Board will ask why kornegay is so awful at his job. And the young ladies who achieved so much for MHS by working so hard are left in limbo. Can the school be foolish enough to let him hire again for this position? Are there any checks and balances at this school? Where is the outrage that Romero is not returning? Lots of questions and we know the answers. So sad and pathetic.

Lucky? Role Model? School rules? What world do you live in? Ron Kornegay is the poster child for overpaid and under utilized. He can't even get buses scheduled correctly to get student athletes to and from their games. We just dismissed two coaches who took this program further than ever in history and you defend this? It's a shame his insecurity results in asking people to defend him on blogs. If he did nothing wrong and stands behind these administrative changes then he should need no defense. Let's see what the progress is over the next year and what the team record is if we even have a team and then form an opinion.

Thomas Day Mr. Kornegay is in poor health and could not stand up to the people who wanted to tear the program down. He is more to be pitied than scorned. He is not fit for the job.
