Belmar Students To Participate In The "Hour Of Code"

Middle School students at Belmar Elementary are gearing up for a computer coding event to be held Tuesday, school officials said.

About 230 students in the fifth through eighth grades are participating in the worldwide “Hour of Code’’ event, part of the Computer Science Education Week, held all next week.

The event, intent on exposing as many kids to computer coding as possible, is being held in 160 countries around the world, involving as many as 4 million students.

Belmar Elementary students – one of the only middle schools in New Jersey to participate in the program -- will hear from a guest speaker who learned to code in the Marines and now makes his living coding, watch some short video clips from the Hour of Code website, then the students will work on some of the coding activities with their Chromebooks from the Hour of Code Website http://csedweek.org/learn. 

The students’ Chromebooks were purchased with funds allocated by the Sandy Relief Funds, according to Kevin O’Donnell network manager at Belmar School.
