Towns Move Toward Renewed Code Contract

Sea Girt signs off on shared services agreement with SLH, Spring Lake, Brielle; Enters new contract to use Manchester's police firing range

Sea Girt is now the second of four Monmouth County shore towns to renew a three-year contract to renew to share construction code services with three other nearby communities.

Spring Lake, Spring Lake Heights and Brielle are Sea Girt’s partners in the updated interlocal services contract which is retroactive to Jan. 1 and runs through Dec. 31, 2013. The original, three-year shared services contract between the four municipalities took effect on Jan. 1, 2007 and expired on Dec. 31, 2010.

A copy of the resolution authorizing Mayor Mark Clemmensen to sign the contract, as adopted by the Sea Girt Borough Council on Wednesday, shows that the participating towns can renew every three years for a total of 15 years.

Once Clemmensen signs the contract, a certified copy of the council-approved resolution will be forwarded to officials in Spring Lake and Brielle. Spring Lake Heights Mayor H. Frances Enright has already signed off on the agreement.

In a separate action, Sea Girt officials agreed to send the town’s police officers south to Manchester Township to use that Ocean County community’s firearms range facility for training purposes.

Under the one-year agreement,  the borough will pay $400 to Manchester Township to use the firing range. The contract dates back to May 9 and ends on May 8, 2012.

Sea Girt is one of many small New Jersey municipalities that has pursued shared interlocal agreements as a cost-cutting measure and to save taxpayer funds.  Currently, the town uses neighboring Wall Township’s courtroom for its municipal court hearings.
