Belmar Adding Boardwalk Gazebo

Shade structure slated for Eighth Avenue, mayor says

Belmar officials this week said they want to build a gazebo-like structure on the boardwalk at Eighth Avenue.

The Borough Council and mayor Wednesday discussed two other locations but input from several concerned residents helped them decide on Eighth Avenue for the location of the shade structure, Mayor Matthew Doherty said Thursday.

The governing body, with the exception of Councilman Brian Magovern, voted to pass a resolution authorizing the borough to pursue a state contract to purchase a gazebo that Doherty said would be similar to the ones along Spring Lake’s boardwalk.

Officials said they want to provide shaded areas along the boardwalk, but some residents were worried the structures would attract vagrants and encourage littering.

“I support it but we need to listen to the problems of the residents. Enough people are here tonight who have concerns. I vote yes, but have to look into the ramifications,” Council President Claire Deicke said.

Doherty said the governing body, which at the meeting had discussed installing a shade structure at either 17th or Second avenues, decided to try for Eighth Avenue to alleviate concerns from several residents who live on 17th Avenue.

Several unhappy residents from 17th Avenue voiced concerns, saying the dwelling would only cause problems for the thoroughfare.

“It causes litter. There are coffee cups. They often attract homeless people who are drunk,” Lianne Kulik of 17th Avenue said.

Residents suggested the Second Avenue location because there is less foot traffic compared to 17th Avenue.

In addition to traffic and liter, some felt it would create an area for summer crowds to hang out while drunk.

Doherty said that the structures would help seniors and others who need shade while on the boardwalk.
