Relief Distribution Center Opened in Belmar

Busy Bee on Main Street offering free laundry services

Belmar opened a Hurricane Relief Distribution Center at the Belmar Arts Council building, 608 River Road, and is directing donations to that facility, officials said Saturday.

"The center is a place for the public to bring donations to assist those in Belmar affected by Hurricane Sandy," according to a release from Mayor Matt Doherty.

Belmar residents in need of care and supplies should report to the gymnasium at 601 Main Street for free food, water, clothing, care kits and cell phone charging stations.

The gymnasium is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, Doherty said.

Officials say there is an ongoing need for flashlights (with batteries), shelf stable food such as canned tuna fish, peanut butter, granola bars, baby food, laundry detergent and toiletries.

Professional food service vendors who wish to volunteer on-site outdoor cooking operations and food service delivery, should contact April Claudio at 732-681-3700.

Busy Bee Laundrette, 1401 Main Street, partnering with the borough, is offering free laundry services, Doherty said.

The laundromat's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents are asked to bring their own detergant, limit their loads to two per visit and be aware of their fellow residents' needs.
