Ocean County Dems Back Buono for Governor

Middlesex County state senator would challenge Gov. Chris Christie

The Ocean County Democratic organization has thrown its support behind state Sen. Barbara Buono for governor.

The Middlesex County Democrat has announced she will challenge incumbent Republican Chris Christie in November.

With word that Newark mayor Cory Booker, state Sen. Richard Codey and state Senate President Stephen Sweeney will not seek the state's highest office, Buono is widely considered to be the Democratic frontrunner in the June primary election.

The Ocean County party organization made its decision to support Buono last weekend after she appeared at a county committee breakfast in Toms River.

Christie has been a "disaster" for New Jersey, Ocean County Democratic Chairman Wyatt Earp said in a statement to Patch.

"Under his watch, New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation and the fourth worst unemployment rate," said Earp. "That's failure."

Despite criticism from Democrats, however, Christie has enjoyed high approval ratings in recent months since Superstorm Sandy struck the state.

A recent Quinnipiac University poll shows Christie holding on to a nearly 75 percent approval rating, the Wall Street Journal reported. The same poll showed Christie leading Buono 63 percent to 22 percent in a hypothetical gubernatorial race.

I am neither a D or R, but I can tell you this much there is no way I will vote for Christie. He needs to go, but I must admit I need to learn more about Buono before I vote for her.

I also am an independent and think it's a crying shame that the Democrats can't find someone who seriously can take on Christie who is walking on very thin ice with the Sandy hit crowd.

It's a shame that Buono isn't going to be given a fair shot. No one really knows who she is, which makes it difficult for her to run against an incumbent which such notoriety/popularity.
