Manasquan Receives Grant for Lifesaving Station

County funds will aid improvements to historic building

The Monmouth County Historical Commission has awarded the borough of Manasquan $5,275 in matching funds to aid in the restoration of the Squan Beach Lifesaving Station.

According to borough Administrator Joseph DeIorio, the funds will be used to replace second-floor windows in the station.

The historic building was constructed in 1902 near the Manasquan beachfront and served as a working Coast Guard facility until 1996. The building was sold to the borough of Manasquan for $1 in 2000 with the understanding that it be rehabilitated.

The borough bonded for $300,000 in repairs to the facility in 2002 but quickly realized that amount would not even begin to scratch the surface of the major repairs needed after many years of neglect and severe storm damage sustained by the station.

The Squan Beach Lifesaving Station Preservation Committee, a local nonprofit established to ensure the building's restoration, has since been established to work with the borough in garnering grants and other funding sources.

Avon-by-the-Sea received $3,800 in funding for restoration to the Avon Pavilion.
