Manasquan Moves Sand Removal Deadline to Feb. 10

Sand must be moved back to beachfront from private property, the borough says, but an original Jan. 30 deadline is now changed to Feb. 10.

The decision to extend the deadline was made "after careful consideration by the beach committee," announced the borough in a post Jan. 31.

An original message warned that the removal of sand from property was the propery owner's responsibility, and could result in a summons for those who did not meet the deadline. The state Department of Environmental Protection responded to Manasquan-Belmar Patch that while there were state laws that established fines, the agency would not make fining residents its priority.

The main reason behind the push to have sand displaced by Hurricane Sandy moved back to the beachfront is that the sand will be sifted by construction equipment and then used to build up the beach.

After additional consideration by our Beach Committee, the Borough will be extending the deadline to move sand to the end of the day, Sunday February 10, 2013.

Sand cannot be placed on the walkway or east of the walkway. However,the sand should be placed within an area 10 feet wide immediately west of the beach walk macadam area. Additionally, we ask that you do not place construction debris or similar materials in the sand as it will hamper sifting operations.

After bids have been awarded and contracts signed, sand sifting
operations is expected to begin the week beginning February 11, 2012.

The replacement of the macadam beach walk is expected to begin in March. During this time, our borough contractors will have the
ability to work from 7am to 7pm Monday through Saturday. Based on favorable weather conditions, we anticipate that work will be completed by May.

The beach restoration project is a massive undertaking and with your assistance, we expect the Manasquan Beaches to be ready and opened by Memorial Day. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.
