Hoboken Mayor: Christie Administration Held Up Sandy Funds To Help Political Allies

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer
Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer

Gov. Chris Christie’s administration told Hoboken's mayor she would get funds to help her city recover from Superstorm Sandy only if she expedited a politically-connected development project, Mayor Dawn Zimmer said today.

Zimmer, a Democrat who has long been an ally of Christie, told  MSNBC host Steve Kornacki that she was pressured by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, Richard Constable, the current commissioner of community affairs, and Lori Grifa, the former commissioner, among others.

Christie's administration has denied the accusations.

Lazereye, you obviously didn't have a place destroyed by Sandy. Insurance is a JOKE! Some people make out ok, but most that I know of don't get enough to cover 10% of the cost to repair. It's crazy and sad. If you didn't have money saved to fix, you were absolutely screwed.
DC January 19, 2014 at 09:44 AM
Not that the government should pay for it, but they should make the insurance companies do what's right. It's all just one big racket.
J.JONES January 19, 2014 at 10:58 AM
It took her over a year to complain Oh wait till she was told to complain jump on the witch hunt ..
Mrs. G. January 19, 2014 at 11:05 AM
If the money is there for victims of Sandy, and they are not receiving it because of CC and company, then it is a big problem. You can have an opinion one way or another if the money should be there in the first place. However it is, and the way CC handled it is something that is a valid question the taxpayers and Sandy victims have a right to have explained.

i agree @brickneedshelp bandwagon time
Mac January 19, 2014 at 11:13 AM
when one is surrounded by overwhelming public supported unprincipled corruption, who does one complain to before the corruption does itself in and starts to lose some of its public glamour (in this case being a part of NJ's Soprano State envisioned wiseguy government)?
chester bojarski January 19, 2014 at 12:04 PM
New Jersey ,the most corrupt state in the nation! It only gets worse , and the slap in the face is,you can't do anything about it!
chester bojarski January 19, 2014 at 12:10 PM
Our elected self serving politicians always seem to have that "I don't remember or I wasn't aware of that " reply when they are caught lying. Do it or you will be sorry works well in New Jersey .
Mac January 19, 2014 at 12:34 PM
not true chester bojarski - you have the power to change the rules of the game - return politically-correct elected official's status to public service, not lifetime political party controlled careers - most elected positions in NJ are parttime for periods of time of three years or less - on any level of our NJ governments, why do any of these elected parttime positions get family health care benefits [often for life] with perks and a pension? - by taking away these annual multi-billion dollar gifts of stupidity the public breaks much of the iron-fisted control power of our state's sleazy political party bosses and open the door for candidates that can stand up for us on their own - since most of the campaign funds raised are raised from those looking for a big payback, I believe dedicating a small percentage of our taxes to allow those seeking public office to have some reasonable public exposure would save us zillions in wasted pork in a rather short period of time - and shaking the illusions that the representation from either the Democrat and Republican Parties on different levels of government share the same community interests beyond money and power control for themselves
Oat 1 January 19, 2014 at 12:53 PM
It's amazing, Hoboken's Mayor Dawn Zimmer, just woke up yesterday and decided the Christie Administration Held Up Sandy Funds To Help Political Allies. What a joke, was she instructed by her party to make some phony waves. How desperate and sad for the political left wing liberal progressives to stoop so low with ridiculous allegations when the press (Optimum's Channel 12) reported from Christies reps that she tweeted 2 weeks ago how great Christie is, her support for him and that his, (Christies) administration had committed 70 million to Hoboken for Sandy Cleanup.
grace January 19, 2014 at 12:55 PM
thank you @ mac you give me hope! so i will keep voting keep telling my children family and friends to vote and do what little we can...i agree with your idea but how and who gets to be appointed to do that? idk if i trust anyone anymore..ya know i really trusted our gov and i still do until further evidence changes that..
grace January 19, 2014 at 12:57 PM
and @ oat 1 you are so correct..its like with the bridge closure how certain groups and people think theyve hit the lottery! disgusts me...called BANDWAGON
Mac January 19, 2014 at 01:12 PM
@Oat 1 - Christie committed to Hurricane Sandy displaced homeowners also but they didn't get any more than this mayor either
Mare January 19, 2014 at 01:59 PM
lazereye, first of all it is the fault of congress and they happen to be Republican. Remember when they said "no" to aid for Sandy, the same cry babies (R) from Oklahoma that said "no" to giving aid to NJ and NY then came crying after Moore OK got hit with a tornado. That's what I call political welfare. The problem I see is with the DONATED monies. Christie's wife was overseeing that money and she let it out to their business friends and friends on the boardwalk so they could get themselves up and running when I know I donated so HOMES could be rebuilt NOT businesses! When do I get my grand back??? That's what I want to know. I still know people who do not have their homes rebuilt, but the businesses are doing GREAT!!! Then to pour salt in the wound, he gave more of that DONATED money to a rebuilt business that burned down, no questions asked! What a waste! jmho
Mare January 19, 2014 at 02:05 PM
"return politically-correct elected official's status to public service, not lifetime political party controlled careers" Amen Mac. Hopefully this most recent incident will turn Christie back to his former highly paid public service! Because Lord knows, and many are hopeful that he won't ever hold any Federal office! Then we'd really be in trouble. Oat 1, the problem is this, he promised her money, she supported him because he acted (Ronal Reagan style) like he cared. When she didn't support him politically (Obama style) she came out with the truth and she's not the only one. You need to read more than just the BrickPatch to know these things! (laughter everyone)
Martin January 19, 2014 at 03:51 PM
Conservative NJ columnist Paul Mulshine wrote today: "He knew in early September that thousands of Jersey drivers - all of whom were paying obscene tolls - were stuck in traffic while trying to get to the jobs that pay his salary. He did nothing even though his cronies were responsible. Then he joked about it. Inexcusable." ==> His political appointees' salaries also have been revealed: Baroni $290,000, Wildstein $150,000 and Bridget Kelly $114,000 ! ==> Now taxpayers will pay for dozens of defense lawyers (up to $1500 an hour). Why don't they just "cooperate" as Christie promised?
Martin January 19, 2014 at 03:53 PM
It's not merely jumping on the "bandwagon." It's not just traffic cones. It's abuse of power for political gain. It's the cover-up lying. It's the naked corruption at the Pork Authority. Soon Christie & Co. will be getting on the paddy wagon.

If you want a clue as to why there is never enough money to take care of us American citizens, then I suggest that you google "Karen Hudes" and watch at least 6 of her interviews she has given to almost a dozen different venues. Mrs. Hudes worked for the World Bank for over 20 years, and along with like minded co-workers from the World Bank, investigated in house corruption for many of those years. She knows where the skeletons are burried. This wi ll be an eye opener for many of you. She was the Chief Counsel of the World Bank and knows where the money goes, including what you pay in Federal Income Taxes.

In order for any politician to advance into the big leagues, first they are brought into the smoke filled back room and asked if they will pledge to ALWAYS support a certain foreign country. If they don't take the pledge, their career is over. The agents of that foreign country will make sure that in the next election his opponent will be financed to the hilt. Other agents will work unceasingly to slander and libel the poor soul, afterall they own 95% of the mainstream media. Just ask Brother Nathaniel. And it's been that way since Kennedy was murdered. Who was it that said "Capitol Hill is _______ occupied territory" ???
KC January 19, 2014 at 10:48 PM
That is only another part of the story. Somebody needs to scratch around as to exactly how and why BELMAR had access to the money to rebuild their boardwalk so quickly! These politicos are all dirtbags.
J.JONES January 19, 2014 at 11:12 PM
@Grace come on why did it take her so long to complain 8 months to a year ..No one answer that yet..If he did wrong he will pay the price..If not he will be next in 2016..Wait and lets see what happens in next couple of weeks ..
Andy Pat January 20, 2014 at 08:07 AM
Zimmer IS jumping on the bandwagon. She is probably being prompted by others. Her timing is not the best. But when she said she is willing to swear under oath to what she said, and even take a lie detector test, I believed her. If this is what Christie means when he says he can work with democrats, the public will not be impressed.
Oat 1 January 20, 2014 at 08:27 AM
@Mare, fortunately I don't read all of the Obama propaganda filled media you and your liberal left wing buddies do. It's not very complicated, although I do realize it's difficult for a PC left winger to understand, She supported him and then a year later came out with a winey BS story to support the left wing cause…. Oh and by the way, the patch speaks out of the left side of their mouths, I guess that was to difficult for you to figure out, now everyone should laugh.
suz January 20, 2014 at 09:31 AM
You are so right Oat 1...If anyone cared to do some further research, they would see how she praised Christie for his Sandy support and commented on what a good Governor he is...she most definitely speaks out of both side of her mouth. I so much agree with you about the Patch as well. They can be bias with their reporting.
Mac January 20, 2014 at 10:09 AM
@Andy Pat - if you were a Democrat supporting Christie, you were either praising the fact you dealt your way out of being indicted when he was our US Prosecutor setting up the files for his run for NJ Governor or were pressured by the large Democrat Party Christie-busted faction to keep a low profile - one does have to watch their back in this kind of company - @suz - bias? - there is a time to cure pork and a time to fry pork - too bad Ocean County political leadership was bred in a flooded can of burnt out SPAM
Mare January 20, 2014 at 06:36 PM
@suz and Oatl, I am merely moderate, don't take sides unless there is reason. The mayor of Hoboken was lied to by the big ham. The ham made promises and she believed him, hence she praised him. When he asked for the political favors she refused to lie or support him in his dubious endeavors. In turn he refused the millions he had promised and only gave the pittance. As far as you right wing extremist tea baggers go (Oadtl), if you did a little research, reading and took the time to "fact check" your opinions, you'd know the truth and stop spewing the lies. You only do your party a disservice when you lie, spread rumor and inuendo. Graduate from high school and then educate yourselves further. Educate, educate, educate then you won't have to spew untruthful opinion.
suz January 20, 2014 at 06:57 PM
Mare, Not spreading rumors...all depends on who you believe. You don't know me, so please don't assume anything about me because you know the ole saying "when you assume..". That, my dear, is how rumors truly start.
DC January 20, 2014 at 07:45 PM
Mare, moderate? Really? Maybe you ought to re-read what you wrote. Facts aren't all out yet, "research" still needs to be done, but sounds like "moderate" you already made up your mind. What's that called? Oh, yeah, guilty till proven innocent... sticks and stones...
Oat 1 January 21, 2014 at 01:15 PM
Mare, moderate, you've got to be kidding, how sad, left wing progressive lunes like you base their entire ideology on lying, inciting anger, blaming others, spreading rumors, spewing hate, name calling and pretending to help the under privileged. You need to grow up and educate yourself how to debate.
jerseytomato January 21, 2014 at 03:31 PM
The Christie bashers on this thread are the same posters that have bashed him since he became Governor. I can barely type this because I'm laughing so hard. Please, PUHLEEZE hold your fellow Democrats feet to the fire when it comes to matters that are truly important. How about Hillary Clinton and Benghazi?? I guess since the Dems couldn't dig up a sex scandal, the next best thing is 'CONE GATE.' One things for sure: The Democrats are freaking worried that Christie could beat Hillary. I love it. This is CONEGATE for chrissakes.
