County Confirms Tie in Lake Como School Election

School budget now in hands of borough council

The Monmouth County Clerk of Elections office has confirmed a tie in the 2011 school election in Lake Como.

Unofficial results from the April 27 school board elections showed a 49 to 49 tie for the district's proposed $2,904,685 school budget for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Board of Elections was waiting on the results from provisional ballots, which may have swayed the vote. They reported Friday that no provisional ballots were cast and the tie was verified this week.

In the unlikely instance of a tie, the budget will go through the same process as if it had been defeated.

The Lake Como Mayor and Council will now be tasked with reviewing the school budget and deciding whether to restore it as proposed or make cuts. State law requires that a governing body making cuts to a defeated budget must show line items they intend to cut and to ensure that their cuts will not adversely affect student education.

Lake Como is one of only 13 non-operating school districts left in the state and one of only three in Monmouth County, along with Allenhurst and Interlaken.

Lake Como pays tuition for its students to attend Belmar Elementary School and Manasquan High School at rates which are determined by the receiving districts.

Voters in Monmouth County came out in force to support local school budgets. Lake Como was one of only seven districts in the county to not approve their budget outright. The other districts with failed budgets include Upper Freehold, Farmingdale, Highlands, Keansburg, Keyport and Union Beach.
