Belmar's Ocean Avenue Reopened from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue for First Time Since Sandy

Road is reopened for vehicles and pedestrians

Ocean Avenue is Belmar has been reopened from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue for the first time since Hurricane Sandy devastated the oceanfront area.

The road will be open to vehicles and pedestrians, but the boardwalk is still closed in the area.

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty confirmed the news on Saturday morning and said he did a call to residents on Friday afternoon as well.

Ocean Avenue has been closed for 146 days, Doherty said.

"As we continue making progress on the boardwalk, we will continue opening more portions of Ocean Avenue," Doherty said.

Doherty said there is no definite timeframe for the opening of the other portions of Ocean Avenue but that the borough is making "great progress."
