Substation Fire Causes Power Outage Late Tuesday

Neptune Township substation fire causes some areas to go black briefly Tuesday.

A fire at a Neptune Township power substation is believed to be behind an outage that darkened a portion of the area shortly before midnight Tuesday, officials said.

Areas north of Route 138 and east of Route 18 went black for a little more than an hour Tuesday around 11:50 p.m., Wall Township Police said. Traffic lights at intersections of Route 35 and 16th Avenue, Route 138 and New Bedford Road and Belmar Boulevard and New Bedford Road failed. The state Department of Transportation assisted with traffic, Sgt. Sean O’Halloran said.

Power was restored around 1:15 a.m. No information was immediately available on the extent of the damages to the substation or the cause of the fire.
