Owners of Bogan's Deep Sea Fishing Center Sentenced for Tax Evasion

William H. Bogan Sr. to spend six months in prison

The owners of Bogan's Deep Sea Fishing Center in Brielle were sentenced today after pleading guilty to income tax evasion in March.

William H. Bogan Sr., 77 was sentenced to six months in prison and six months home confinement with electronic monitoring. His daughter, Sharon Bogan, 47 was sentenced to two years probation.

The Bogans, owners of several charter fishing boats and river cruising boats located in Brielle and Point Pleasant Beach, failed to report large portions of income earned for five years, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

From 2004 through 2009, the Bogans kept for their personal use a large portion of the business receipts received by their charter fishing and river cruising boats – primarily payments in the form of cash and checks made out to “Captain Bogan” – and failed to report these receipts on their respective personal income tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

William Bogan also had admitted that he maintained a “second set of books,” which was recovered by special agents of the IRS during a search of his personal residence and which he used to record the amount of income he received but did not report to the IRS, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

In addition to the prison term, William Bogan was sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

Wow, how severe. That will teach them a lesson. Hope the slap on the wrist didn't hurt.

Who cares, it's their money and I don't blame them one bit for trying to keep a little extra for themselves instead of coughing everything up to the gov't. This day in age where so much abuse of "the system" goes on, so many illegal aliens get to take part of our country, people who mooch off the backs of hard working citizens, the Bogan's wanted a bit more for their long hours, took a shot at keeping a little extra for themselves and got caught. It's the American way. It's been going on in history since taxes were created, people always try and keep what they feel is rightfully theirs.

Six months in prison is not so much fun at 77 years old. And it is a very small business, the amount they were not reporting was not that much. The more cash you take, the more jail time, the bigger the fines. Plus they have to pay back everything they owe with interest.

The Bogans are just ahead of their time. Our kids and grandkids will look at them as pioneers. They are going to be paying for our debt. They will have to learn how to survive in an underground economy. No one will be able to afford the massive taxes government will demand.
Y'all Crazy January 08, 2013 at 11:32 AM
Yeah people have to pay taxes. But it sucks that one must go to jail cause they wanted to keep some extra of there own money that they earned themselves. I really hate America. Land of the Slaves to government
Bowie Thelonius January 08, 2013 at 12:47 PM
I don't blame them. The bigger government gets, the poorer small business owners and workers will be. But don't worry, there will still be plenty of money for EBT and welfare.

Justmeasking January 08, 2013 at 03:26 PM
Everyone and I mean everyone who receives cash as income whether it be a business or waiters, waitresses etc do the same exact thing... I mean who's kidding who? The poor old guy shouldn't have to do jail time but they should have to pay what they owe in taxes... Why should all of us who are paid by check or direct deposit have to pay everything we owe and those who receive cash are mostly ignored unless they do something to be investigated?

These comments are a symptom of what's wrong with our voluntary tax system. If EVERYONE paid what they were suppose to, the country wouldn't be in the fiscal mess it is. The 2012 tax gap (difference between what is collected and what should have been collected) is 400 billion dollars. Why are the Bogans any better than me or any of the other folks out there that work hard, commute long distances, and make sacrifices to have a roof over our heads and food on the table and pay ALL our taxes through W2 withholding. Since when is it admirable to try and break the law and get over on your neighbors? You don't like how your elected officials are spending the money, vote them out. Pay your taxes or go to jail. Set the example for your kids. Have some integrity. Guarantee all you tax cheats are the first ones in line for unemployment, FEMA Aid, medicare, etc.... It's the "get over" culture that is killing us.

No good deed goes unpunished it just took the government 79 years to reach out to the Bogan Family. In 1934 Captain Bogan's Father rescued 67 people from the Moro Castle. Help was on the way, it just wasn't from the US Coast Guard. Mission Accomplished.
A Resident January 09, 2013 at 01:15 PM
and I am sure his Dad would be so proud of his tax cheating son......Not.
jerseyswamps January 09, 2013 at 04:44 PM
And if Dad had to pay the taxes the son pays he'd probably would have had to send the Moro Castle a bill.
walt stevens January 09, 2013 at 04:49 PM
BTW: This is an annual Rite of passage for the IRS: just before April 15 they make an example out of a Captain Bogan, Wesley Snipes, or a Redd Foxx. I'm not a CPA, but, Pay your taxes or else....
Ellen SKI January 09, 2013 at 06:50 PM
Very true, it is the "get over culture that is killing us. The tax cheats belong right up there with the food stamp, unemployment, and other "entitlement" abusers. I don't care if you agree with the amount you are taxed or not, it is the law, and cheating on your taxes is illegal and immoral. I believe in karma, and cheaters are always punished or miserable in the end.
Wally Wall January 09, 2013 at 10:31 PM
Yea But All the Illeagals in front of the Acme in Manasquan, the muster zone in Lakewood and all that hang out in Freehold down the road from the courthouse are untouchable. How much in taxes do they pay ? They want free education, medical and for us to learn Spanish.
Laura January 09, 2013 at 11:57 PM
It depends on how much you pay all the contractors that are using them, now doesn't it?
Rick Ricky January 10, 2013 at 02:05 AM
True, but like you said, everyone who receives cash is doing it. Some big businesses, some small businesses, Including teen baby sitters. Are we ready to start putting them in jail too.
Rick Ricky January 10, 2013 at 02:09 AM
True.. It's the "get over" culture that is killing us. It is happening everywhere, all types of business, some larger, some smaller, towns are getting over, our elected officials lie, they give unnecessary jobs out to their friends, that is cheating the tax payers, it does not matter if you vote them out, you get in new ones who do the same thing. It truly is a "get over" culture. It is happening on different levels, doling out jobs is the same as money being taken and abused.
Rick Ricky January 10, 2013 at 02:17 AM
There is heck a lot more surrounding companies and families who is cheating a lot more than the Bogan's family business. He should rat them all out.
Canon January 11, 2013 at 01:48 AM
Canon They have been doing this for years. Also ask there employees about there pays. and tips one for me and one for you. They didn't just cheat the goverment they cheated a lot of people.
