Osprey Nest Causing Shut Down Of Spring Lake’s Fire Alarm Near Belmar

A family of ospreys has decided to build their nest on top of Spring Lake’s fire alarm, which sits about 100 feet up on a pole behind the police and fire station. The alarm can be heard in neighboring towns, such as Belmar.

Ospreys are a protected species in the Garden State so the alarm had to be shut down while the family of birds remains nestled there, according to ChasingNJ on My9.

The alarm has been shut down for over a month now and now some locals like Tom Shedaker are concerned. Borough Administrator Bryan Dempsey said there really isn’t any emergency to move the birds and reinstate the alarm. He said that the towns been working hand in hand with the state to deal with the situation and that the alarm is really just one of several ways that the Spring Lake volunteer fire department is notified in case of an emergency, according to Chasing NJ.
