Friday afternoon blaze on Evergreen Avenue contained

A Bradley Beach home was badly damaged in an afternoon fire on Friday.

The blaze, which was reported at 3:43 p.m., began on the enclosed porch area at the rear of the single-family dwelling at 423 Evergreen Ave. and quickly spread to the second floor.

According to Bradley Beach Police Chief Leonard Guida, the fire burned for nearly an hour before firefighting teams from Bradley Beach, with mutual aid from Avon, Ocean Grove, Asbury Park and Neptune, were able to put it down.

A firefighter sustained an injury while battling the blaze. He was treated at the scene and continued to work, Guida said.

"We don't know exactly what the circumstances are," Guida said.

The home has reportedly been unoccupied for some time, but Guida said that a contractor had been in the home earlier in the day spraying insulation.
