Crime Tipsters Can Earn Big in Monmouth County

New partnership will pay crime tipsters up to $5,000.

Local residents that witness or have valuable information regarding a crime could earn big bucks by submitting a tip to Crime Stoppers, Monmouth County Acting Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni announced Tuesday.

The Prosecutor’s Office, Crime stoppers, the county Sheriff’s Office and the Board of Chosen Freeholders established a partnership in which tipsters will be paid up to $5,000 if their tip leads to an arrest.

Residents can provide information anonymously, and can pick up the cash reward at Crime Stopper’s bank in Freehold using a confidential code number assigned to them.

“Crime Stoppers is a great conduit for getting information into the hands of law enforcement because we don’t need your name, just your information,” Sheriff Golden said.

Nearly 15,000 crimes were committed in Monmouth County during 2011, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. But not every case was solved because vital information was lacking, according to a news release.

“Unfortunately people with information about crimes are often reluctant to cooperate with law enforcement because they are afraid of retaliation, they do not care enough to get involved, or they want something in exchange for the information. Crime Stoppers offers cash with anonymity as a solution to this lack of information,” Gramiccioni said.

Tips can be made by phone, text or on the Internet. A Law Enforcement Coordinator will review the tip and forward it to the appropriate agency for investigation, the news release said.

When a tip is received, the tipster is assigned a confidential code number, which is his or her only identity in the system, according to the news release.

A volunteer Board of Directors made up of local citizens determines the amount of the each award, the news release said. The reward depends on factors such as how helpful the tip is in solving the case and the seriousness of the crime.

The Board of Directors will also oversee the routine business affairs, raise funds to pay the awards and advertise Crime Stoppers to the public.

Monmouth County Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization funded by tax-deductible contributions.

Tips can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-671-4400, texting “MONMOUTH” and the tip to 274637 or online atwww.monmouthcountycrimestoppers.com.
