Crime Rate Increased for Manasquan Overall, Violent Incidents Up

Uniform Crime Report data for 2011 just released

Manasquan saw more incidents of violent and nonviolent crime in 2011 versus 2010, according to state crime statistics released recently.

In 2010, total incidents totaled 172. The number of incidents increased to 221 in 2011, according to the New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

One category of crime dropped over 2010: burglary. In Manasquan, 23 burglaries occurred in 2011 versus 31 in 2010.

Only a small portion of the total 221 incidents were considered violent crimes in categories such as aggravated assaults, but the number of violent crime incidents more than doubled. There were four incidents of violent crime in 2010, with 11 incidents reported in 2011.

That created a crime rate per 1,000 residents: 29.2 for 2010 and 37.5 for 2011. When considering violent incidents per 1,000 residents, the crime rate was 0.7 for 2010 and 1.9 for 2011.

With less than a dozen reports of violent crime in Manasquan, the small number of incidents for 2011 were an increase in three categories: zero murders, one sexual assault, three robberies and seven aggravated assaults. In 2010, there were zero incidents of murder and sexual assault, one robbery and three aggravated assaults.

Larceny incidents grew from 137 to 186 in 2011. And one motor vehicle was stolen in Manasquan, versus zero in 2010. Two incidents of arson were reported each year.

The four violent crime categories are murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault; and three non-violent are burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

As required by statute, all law enforcement agencies in the state submit monthly and annual summary crime reports to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, under the NJ State Police.

Information about 2012 will be released in December 2013. 

Overall crime in New Jersey rose 3 percent from 2010 to 2011, but violent crimes remained the same, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.
