Alleged Avon Burglar Nabbed in Bradley Beach

Police chase suspect through several residential yards

An Asbury Park man accused of burglarizing an Avon-By-The-Sea residence on Tuesday and leading several Bradley Beach police officers on a chase later that day appeared in Superior Court Thursday, documents show.

Lamar Johnson, 40, of Atkins Avenue, allegedly entered the garage of an Avon home in the 700 block of Third Avenue and stole a Garmin Nuvi navigation unit valued at $400, the criminal complaint says.

Later that day in neighboring Bradley Beach, Johnson was approached by borough police in the 600 block of Burlington Avenue and allegedly fled on bike and foot, scaling several high fences through three residential yards.

After police caught up with him, Johnson was found in possession of the alleged stolen navigation device and bolt cutters which he admitted he was going to use to steal a bicycle.

Johnson also admitted he fled from police because he thought he had a warrant out for his arrest.

Documents show Johnson had a previous warrant for failing to appear in court.

Johnson also faces charges for trespassing on private property and "creating a substantial risk of causing serious injury" to several officers during the chase, the complaint says.

The officers ran through traffic and climbed over several high fences into dark yards in pursuit of Johnson, who fled after police told him he was under arrest.

Johnson's total bail was set at $45,000 -- $35,000 in Bradley Beach; $10,000 in Avon -- with no ten percent option, documents show.
