Pierre J. Mendoza, M.D. Named Medical Director for Urologic Robotic Surgery at Ocean Medical Center

One of the region’s most experienced robotic urology surgeons brings expertise to shore community.

Urologist Pierre J. Mendoza, M.D., has been appointed Medical Director for Urologic Robotic Surgery at Ocean Medical Center.  

“Dr. Mendoza is recognized as one of the top urologic robotic surgeons in the region, and we are so pleased that he has made Ocean Medical Center his hospital of choice,” says Dean Lin, FACHE, president of Ocean Medical Center. “Dr. Mendoza’s talents will be paired with an experienced and compassionate team and state-of-the-art technology for an exceptional patient experience.”

Dr. Mendoza was one of the first physicians in the country to be trained in robotic surgery in Boston. He’s been performing robotic procedures since 2003, and has some of the most extensive training and surgical experience in the field of urologic robotic surgery. In this specialized field, he is one of the only fellowship trained surgeons in the area, and brings with him leadership position experience from other robotic programs in Philadelphia and Boston.

“When Ocean Medical Center added robotic technology to the comprehensive surgical services just a few months ago, I saw it as a great opportunity to build a tremendous robotics program right here in Brick,” says Dr. Mendoza. “Ocean is a great facility. Dr. Mendoza earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, where he completed his residency training in general surgery and urology. He completed fellowship training in robotic surgery and minimally invasive uro-oncology the University Of Pennsylvania Health System / Penn Presbyterian.

Having grown up in Forked River, NJ, Dr. Mendoza has a special place in his heart when it comes to caring for residents in Ocean and Monmouth counties. “It’s nice to bring my training back home and know that local residents won’t have to travel to get the most advanced technology and services,” he says.

Ocean Medical Center became home to the newest version of the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System in December, bringing the latest technology in surgery to the medical center’s operating room and to the community. This technological advancement provides Ocean’s surgeons with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control that enables a minimally invasive approach for many complex surgical procedures. It can be used for a multitude of procedures, including, but not limited to: prostatectomy, hysterectomy, myomectomy, and colorectal surgery.

Robot-assisted surgery allows patients to have major surgery with only a few tiny incisions. Benefits include faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, less pain, less risk of infection, smaller incisions with less scarring, and a quicker return to daily activities.
