Lets Re-think the "Kids Menu!"

Lets give our kids the good stuff! Why are Kid Menus junk food?

Have you gone to a restaurant lately with your child and seen the choices on the "Kids Menu"? Is it any wonder that we have an epidemic of childhood obesity? Here it is: Chicken Fingers, Mac and Cheese, Hot Dog, Burger w/Fries, and if the kid is really lucky, maybe Pasta with Sauce. Thats it! Now, to be fair there are some restaurants that offer additional choices like, grapes, mixed fruit and even the occaisional mixed veggie, but for the most part, the kids choices are junk first with the semi-healthy choices as an after thought.

My point is, eating right as an adult begins with eating right as a child, and since we parents must make the choices for our kids we need to help them to learn what the good choices are right from the start, be firm with their finicky protests and make healthy food the fun choice.

I'd love to see a kids menu with grilled chicken cut into animal shapes, fresh veggies  cut to eat with fingers and low fat cheese... whole wheat bread and pasta perhaps? Fruit for dessert. Good food can be fun too, how about having that message on the coloring menu they get with the crayons...

From someone who worked in the restaurant business for many years, the kids menu is not something that chef's are overly concerned with, and it is usually offered as a courtesy. The items on the menu are usually things that kids like. I think the occasional burger or chicken fingers is fine in moderation. You can always order off the regular menu as well. Usually, we will order a few items off the menu and share with our kids - they like grown up food better anyway.

I tend to agree, why shouldn't children just eat "real" food? I don't believe my kids ever ate from the kids menu, I would usually order them a half portion of real food. They are now teenagers and will eat just about anything, and are open to trying new things. In our house we always had a "No Thank-You Bite Rule", in other words the kids always had to take one bite of whatever was offered or new, if they didn't like it they could just say No Thank You to anymore, but, they realized they actually love quite a few different things. The problem with many kids menus are the parents that fall into the "Oh, Johnny only eats chicken nuggets" crowd, and they allow Johnny to grow up having only tasted a chicken nugget!
