Election Day: School Board Battles In Belmar, Wall and Manasquan

All three towns have contested Board of Education races.

New Jersey voters are called on to return to the polls today just shy of three weeks after the last election in an unusual election season.

Tuesday’s general election polling is markedly different, however, from the Oct. 16 special election for a junior U.S. Senator. Where only one race appeared on the October ballot, a host of races are to be decided in the day’s polling.

Among them, a gubernatorial election, county seats and municipal races pepper each of the state’s 21 counties.

Several school board elections also are taking place today.

In Wall, six have filed to run for three, three-year terms. Only five are eligible.

·       Ralph Addonizio, of Shoreline Drive

·       Eric Brophy, of Cortland Drive

·       Kiriakos (Kirk) Evangeliou, of Sycamore Street

·       Timothy J. Farrell, of Walton Way

·       Michael R. Pirtle II, of Atlantic Avenue

·       Mary Catherine McCarthy-Spellman, formerly of Campbell Road

Mary Catherine McCarthy-Spellman moved out of the district and resigned from the board last month after filing to run for a full term.

Two candidates have filed for a two-year unexpired term:

·       Kerrin A. McGowan, of Orchard Crest Boulevard

·       Colin L. Nash, of Sycamore Street

And one candidate has filed for a one-year unexpired term, but she does not want the seat.

Denise Vodola, of Raquet Road, is on the ballot as the sole candiate for the term. But she has previously said she would decline the seat if she won it. Only a write-in candidate has a chance of defeating the Vodola, despite her lack of interest.

In Manasquan where a proposed sports complex for the high school weighs heavy on the board elections, four are vying for three, three-year terms on the school board.

Incumbents James Walsh and Michael Shelton, along with Alfred Sorino III and Heather Garrett-Muly are hoping to sway voters’ attention for the trio of full board terms.

And for a one-year unexpired term on the board a trio of candidates are competing.

Donna Bassone and incumbents Katherine Verdi and Thomas Bauer are each vying for the seat.

In Belmar, four are contending for three, three-year terms on that town’s Board of Education.

Karen Barry and incubents Jean Folker, Cherie Adams and Aileen Fahy are battling for full board terms.
