Special Meeting Tonight for Manasquan High School Athletic Fields Plan

7 p.m. in High School Auditorium

A controversial plan to revamp the school district athletic fields will be the focus of a special meeting 7 p.m. tonight at Manasquan High School.

The high school fields are in disrepair, said School Board President Tom Bauer at the previous school board meeting, and the district is investigating how to renovate them. Drainage and wear and tear issues remain a concern, in addition to the facilities falling behind compared to other district's, Bauer said.

The special meeting was recently posted on the school district website. It will begin 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium and is listed to last through 8 p.m.

A "Warrior Atheltic Fields Master Plan" was previously approved after a 2012 study. The school district resurrected the plan at its June meeting, and is discussing the plan at tonight's meeting.

The June meeting sparked controversy, with Mayor George Dempsey criticizing the board's processes, in putting athletic field renovations on its June agenda. Critics at the meeting, and Dempsey in a council meeting statement, said the project was a major one impacting not just the district's look and feel but possibly drawing a high price tag, and that the board was not devoting enough discussion and public impact on the project.

The June agenda re-adopted the master plan for the fields, chose an engineer for the project, and passed a resolution to contract bids for the field projects.
