This week, Congressman Jon Runyan (NJ-3) wrote the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) urging them to begin construction on the Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet Shore Protection Project as soon as possible, and requested a timeline from groundbreaking to completion of the project. In the letter Runyan stressed that the ACOE should first construct projects in areas that suffered the most and remain vulnerable to damage from future storms.
“The Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet Shore Protection Project contains some of the most at risk coastal areas in all of New Jersey,” stated Runyan. “Hurricane Sandy proved that communities like Mantoloking, Normandy Beach, Ortley Beach, and Seaside Heights have serious vulnerabilities. With hurricane season already here we need to begin construction of protective dunes as soon as possible in order to prevent future damages.”
On May 30 the ACOE submitted its “Second Interim Report, Disaster Relief Appropriations Act 2013” to Congress. This report outlined which projects were eligible for funding and the estimated cost of completion for each project. The Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet project was on the list.
