National Guard Troops in Belmar

Two-dozen troops between three towns, Doherty says

U.S. National Guard troops have landed in Belmar as of late Wednesday, officials said. 

The troops, 24 in all, are locking down the ocean section of Belmar, Lake Como and Spring Lake, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said.

One Belmar resident reported coming face-to-face with troops in a humvee just after 10 p.m. Wednesday. 

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the troops were "cautious but friendly."

A county-imposed curfew of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., in effect now for days, is being enforced, officials have said. 

Additionally, there are 12 state troopers and countless more local police securing the area, Doherty said.
