Belmar's Main Street Bridge to Avon Closed 60 Days

Storm damaged drawbridge's electrical and mechanical systems

Belmar's Main Street bridge with Avon-By-The-Sea will be closed for approximately 60 days, according to the NJDOT. 

The transportation department announced Thursday that beginning Friday morning the bridge wll pin in the open position for "extensive" electrical repairs, according to a governor's office release.  

The onslaught of tidal flooding and wind from Hurricane Sandy damaged the electrical and mechanical systems that power the drawbridge, the release says.

During the closure, motorists and pedestrians will be redirected to the Route 35 bridge over the Shark River, located just west of the Main Street, or Route 71, bridge, the release says.
