24-Hour Drug Collection Comes to Another Police Headquarters

Spring Lake Heights Police Headquarters now a third location for Monmouth County

"Project Medicine Drop" will add a new 24 hour place where area residents can anonymously drop off unwanted and unused prescription drugs, at the Spring Lake Heights Police Headquarters.

The idea of these drug collection sites is to provide a place to anonymously drop off prescription drugs, ones that were illegally found, no longer used, or expired.

Prescription drugs hanging around in medicine cabinets are a target for abuse, so the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs created the Project Medicine Drop sites to encourage residents to get rid of them at police stations with these special containers for collection, instead of letting them linger in medicine cabinets.

The other point of this collection site, officials said, is so medications are not flushed down the toilet as medical waste pollution; the containers mean safer disposal.

Anyone can make a drop off at the police headquarters, at any time. The container is always accessible for depositing, and sits in the police lobby anchored to the floor. Police headquarters is at 555 Brighton Avenue, Spring Lake Heights, 07762, (732) 449-6161.

Prescription pills, patches, capsules, bottles and even pet medications can be deposited, just read the instructions at the drop off site for specifics.

Spring Lake Heights is now the third location in Monmouth County for Project Drop Off, the others being Howell and Marlboro.

Here is the complete announcement from Spring Lake Heights Police:
"Our prescription drug drop box has arrived and is fully operational. Residents, and anyone from neighboring communities can now drop off their unused, expired, and unwanted prescription medication freely and anonymously 24/7. It will be stationed in our police headquarters lobby permanently, locked, and anchored into the floor. We will be one of three towns in Monmouth County that have this stationed in their headquarters with Howell and Marlboro being the other two towns. The name of this program is called "Project Medicine Drop" and is being sponsored through the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs. There are instructions on the drop box on what you can and can't put in the box. You can drop in pills, medication patches, capsules, even your pet's medications. Don't throw away or flush your old, expired, or unwanted meds, drop them at SLHPD"
