Monmouth Tourism Revenues Up Nearly 5 Percent In 2013

Despite bad weather and damage to second homes on the shore, Monmouth tourism revenues rose higher than other counties.

Monmouth County's tourism industry generated $2.2 billion in sales in 2013 — a 4.9 percent gain — despite Superstorm Sandy devastation in popular shore towns like Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach, according to a new economic report.

The gain was the third highest percentage gain reported in New Jersey, according to Tourism Economics, which produced the report for the NJ Division of Travel & Tourism. Leading the state was Morris and Sussex counties.

Overall, tourism spending in all of New Jersey totaled $38.4 billion, up 1.3 percent from the year before.

In Monmouth, most of the tourism dollars were spent on food and beverage purchases ($573 million), followed by recreation ($490 million), lodging ($433 million) and retail ($417 million).

Employment directly related to tourism in 2013 amounted to $21 million, a 3.6 percent gain over 2012.

Monmouth County tourism generated a $280.5 million bump for state and local tax rolls, or 3.8% increase from the year before.
