First Dance Of The School Year Attracts About 600 Teens

Tickets to the monthly St. Denis dance sold out in just hours, officials said.

St. Denis School in Manasquan held its first monthly teen dance on Friday with about 600 middle school-aged teens from the surrounding area attending the three-hour event.

The parochial school on Virginia Ave., since the late 1990s has held monthly dances for area 6th, 7th, and 8th grader which have become one of the most popular events for young people in the area. The proceeds of the $12 admission go toward the school’s athletic department, helping to offset the cost of the programs, school officials said.

Members of the Manasquan Police Department and dozens of parent volunteers man the events, which often sell out in just hours, school officials said.

“I know my daughter is in a safe place for three hours, having fun, and she gets a free soda or bottle of water with her ticket,’’ said Michele VanWoerkom, a St. Denis parent. “I don’t know where else you can get a fun night out for the kids and peace of mind for the parents for only $12.”
