"An American Wake" event celebrates Irish culture and heritage
Kicking off a weekend of parade events, Belmar's Waterview Pavilion played host to "An American Wake."
The event featured Irish music, dancing, singing, food and drink.
The name comes from an event popular in Ireland during times of emigration to the United States. When a person was leaving for the U.S., friends and family would gather to give them a proper send off. Since it was often unlikely that they would ever return, the event was deemed a wake of sorts.
