Belmar to Showcase Family Movies on the Beachfront

For the next nine weeks, a wide variety of films will be shown on the Belmar beachfront for families of all ages to enjoy

For many during the summer, two favorite things people enjoy doing are going to the beach and going to see a movie. This summer, the Borough of Belmar will be combining the two, as every Sunday night for the duration of the summer, the borough will be holding Sunday Night Movies on the 8th Avenue Beach.

This event is free to the public, and all attendees should bring chairs or blankets to sit on. The borough will install a projection screen for Sunday nights only at the 8th Avenue beach, and local residents and movie buffs are welcome to attend and catch their favorite films. The films will begin as soon as it is dark out enough to screen the movies.

On July 3, the classic film, The Goonies will be shown. This is a 1985 film starring Sean Astin and Josh Brolin where a group of children go off in search of hidden treasure. It is a beloved film for many children of all ages.

On July 31, one of the most inspirational sports dramas of all time will be shown, as the 1993 film Rudy will be presented. This movie features Sean Astin as the title character, who though is small in stature, manages to overcome the odds and play his way on to the Notre Dame University football team.

On August 7, one of the most popular movies in recent years will be shown, as 2010’s Toy Story 3 will be playing. This film picks up after the last two, with Andy leaving for college and his beloved toys voiced by the likes of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen waiting to learn what will become of them.

Next up, on August 14, the 1970 family film, The Aristocats, will be shown. This film features the voice of Eva Gabor, and follows a group of wealthy felines living in France.

On August 21, the 2009 comedy Hotel for Dogs will be shown. This film features the acting talents of Lisa Kudrow, Don Cheadle and Kevin Dillon, and is about children who turn an abandoned hotel into a home for canines.

The last film to be showcased this summer will be the 1977 hybrid live/animated film Pete’s Dragon. The movie, featuring the acting talents of Mickey Rooney, is about an orphan named Pete, and his friend, a dragon named Elliot.

All of these movies will be shown on the beach if weather permits. For more information on any of these movies, please contact the Borough of Belmar at 732-681-3700, or visit the borough’s website at www.belmar.com.
