Algae Invades Belmar's Beaches

Locals say the water looks clear, officials say algae causes no harm to humans

Algae is showing up in Belmar, part of a larger bloom off the Jersey Shore, reports say.

Satellites picked up an outburst of phytoplankton along the shore last week, but many locals aren't spending any time worry, Chasing New Jersey reported this week.

"I don't see it as that bad this year, usually the water is that cloudy color but so far this year it's been pretty clear," said local fisherman Jesse Thomas.

The algae, officials have said, is not harmful to humans, but can contribute to cooler water temperatures, which can be harmful to fish.
