About The Ocean Avenue Mile:

This year’s Excel Travel Ocean Avenue Mile, has been upgraded by the USATF to a Road Mile Championship, and heats have been designed to both challenge and accommodate runners from beginner to elite. The race celebrates the mile as America's distance and a traditional road racing speed trap, while encouraging new runners to experience a race held sacred for centuries.

“The Ocean Avenue mile is part of a revival of the mile road race, which is longer than the 1,500-meter track and field race, and, obviously, not done on a track. In 1999, the United States had 330 road mile races. Now, according to RunningUSA, there are more than 600, and the "Bring Back the Mile" campaign is in its second year. So is the Ocean Avenue Mile race,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The Ocean Avenue Mile will have eight different heats consisting of charity mile, children's mile, corporate challenge, women only mile, and age group races, before being capped off by two elite heats. The race is run on a flat, fast course along the scenic Long Branch promenade.

About Kick Cancer Overboard:

Kick Cancer Overboard is a local non-profit organization with a very simple mission: To give away FREE cruises, to people whose lives have been affected by cancer. During this annual cruise, their main concern is NOT how to pay for their next medical bill, but whether to play bingo, get a massage or sing karaoke all night long.

Anybody affected by cancer can submit their request for a free cruise (on the KCO website). A committee will review the entries on a regular basis and choose the most deserving cancer fighters.

Because of the overwhelming support from many local businesses, Kick Cancer Overboard has been able to sponsor 80 people to date, and offer them a well-deserved break on a beautiful cruise ship. You can view their stories at www.kickcanceroverboard.org.
