A woman suffering from heart failure aboard a cruise ship was rescued early Thursday by U.S. Coast Guard officials while the vessel was 20 miles off Toms River's shore. Personnel aboard the Splendor, a 952-foot Carnival cruise ship, contacted Coast Guard watchstanders in New York at about 12:40 a.m. Thursday and reported a 66-year-old woman aboard was experiencing heart failure, according to a news release. A rescue crew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City was dispatched to the cruise ship to rescue the woman, who was not immediately identified by authorities. Councilman criticizes lateness of bill list before council meeting
A Belmar police officer lost a $1,600 wedding ring during the Hurricane Sandy emergency response and was later reimbursed by the borough, in an incident Belmar officials said was an oversight and a mistake, according to a report by the Asbury Park Press. The Belmar officer, Officer Michael Campbell, has reimbursed the borough, according to the report. Mayor Matt Doherty called the incident a mistake and Borough Administrator Colleen Connolly said the reimbursement was mistakenly made during the post-Sandy administrative tasks. Councilman Jim Bean said in the APP report that the mistake is unacceptable, and pointed out the procedures to approve invoices often require multiple sets of eyes to make it to the council bill list. Doherty said …
William Hill hired as Monmouth Park's sports betting provider
If sports betting becomes legalized in New Jersey, Monmouth Park says it is ready to bring it to the Oceanport racetrack. Monmouth Park has teamed with William Hill, a sports betting company, for a long-term agreement to become the racetrack's exclusive sports betting provider. "We are looking forward to a long and successful partnership with Monmouth Park," William Hill US CEO Joe Asher said during a press conference on Tuesday. Should sports betting become legal under federal law, William Hill will develop a Las Vegas-style sports book at Monmouth Park once New Jersey gaming regulatory authorities approve of the plan. The state enacted a law legalizing sports betting in 2012 following a voter referendum that passed by a 2-to-1 margin. …

New Jersey Turnpike Authority slightly alters design
The Garden State Parkway Exit 105 reconfiguration project will begin by the "end of summer," according to New Jersey Turnpike Authority Spokesman Thomas Feeney. The project will also feature one change in response to local concerns. A left-turn lane and traffic signal will be added at the intersection of Wayside Road and Pinebrook Road. This is being done to help ease traffic concerns from the increased amount of people expected to use Wayside Road. The $40 million project will completed in two contracts. The first contract will include the reconstruction of Exit 105 at the intersection of Hope Road and Route 36. The main improvement at the Hope Road intersection will include a new ramp from the parkway north exit that would run between …
Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.
Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016. Christie quietly had the Lap-Band -- or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding -- procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary Pat and the kids and going, 'I have to do this for them, even if I don’t …
November election candidate deadline approaching
Candidates for local school boards have less than a month to file their candidacy with the county clerk. Now, candidates have until June 4 to file a petition to run in November, said the county clerk's office. Local races in Manasquan, Wall and Belmar, among others, switched to a November school board race last year. The move to a November election was allowed under a newly passed state law, giving districts the choice to keep an April election or move it to coincide with the general election in November. Candidates will be listed in a separate section of the November ballot, as school board elections are nonpartisan.
Less than three weeks until May 23 beach celebration
Will Manasquan be ready for Memorial Day? Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio said the answer is "a resounding yes." DeIorio outlined the coming weeks' project schedule, culminating in a May 23 reopening celebration of the beachfront. The beachfront walkway should be completed by May 15, DeIorio said, adding that day is a target date for several projects. The asphalt top coat should be laid beginning May 13, according to the borough engineer. Electrical cables will be installed this week, and the light poles will be installed May 13-17, as well as Saturday, he said. Beach lockers at the Sea Watch should be ready May 15, with the seasonal parking lot also ready that day, DeIorio said. However, the bids to run a mobile concession at the Sea …

Celebration to be held at former Taylor Pavilion
Belmar continues to plan for a grand re-opening of its beach and boardwalk, May 22. The final boards are lain and railings are now going up. Concession trailers and bathrooms will be installed for the season until permanent facilities go up in 2014, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said. The permanent lighting may not be installed in time, leaving the borough to go with temporary spotlights or another fix, said the mayor, but otherwise the boardwalk and beach will function in time for the grand re-opening. The re-opening is being planned with much fanfare, said the mayor. The elementary students of Belmar and Saint Rose schools will be invited, and the Belmar Strong volunteers will be honored. There are plans for special presentations, t-shirts …
