Rebuilding continues to rule the day, but breaking news such as a gas line break and pedestrians struck in Belmar made for an eventful week. In addition to the tremendous emergency response from Hurricane Sandy, 2012 saw a year's worth of major crime and fire. Police, fire and other emergency responders saw multi-home blazes as well as water responses. But the year also featured the emergency responders of the Manasquan-Belmar area engaged in many civic projects, too, and we dug out some of the top images from this year for a special photo gallery. Long before last night's tree lighting in Belmar, the borough and surrounding area brought out the red bows and twinkling lights for the neighborhood. In Manasquan, the tell-tale sign of the holidays is Christmas trees placed at key intersections, adorned with cheerful red decorations. Local businesses such as the Spirit of 76, Squan Tavern and more are all in the holiday spirit, sporting their Christmas best. Friday at 3 p.m., the lines had already built for a snack and some face painting. But the real cause for the celebration was that the Belmar library had reopened. A special event featuring municipal, school district and library officials kicked off the reopening party, marking the first day since Hurricane Sandy that the Belmar library was open for business. The heat had kicked on that morning, and the lights and computer systems were up, but the first floor meeting space, computers and other items remain destroyed. The damage to Manasquan's eastern portions came into clearer view this week after the borough lifted access restrictions to eastern portions Monday. The area allowed the return of residents as well as onlookers and contractors who were taking in the damage and reopening areas deemed safe. While so many businesses and homes need renovation, and the remnants of storm-swept sand still lined many streets, still residents went about their normal routines as much as possible.
