May 15 bridgework is expected to create traffic delays through 3 p.m. today on Main Street between Belmar and Avon. The county project began this morning with work on the bridge, and drivers are warned their may be lane closures and traffic backups on both sides as a result. Additionally, portions of 13th in Belmar are open to local traffic only as a project there proceeds.  Ocean Avenue in Belmar south of 13th Avenue is also currently closed for the final days of boardwalk reconstruction there. Construction crews are present throughout the length of Ocean Avenue in Belmar to install railings…
A round-up of traffic projects in the area: Manasquan: The beachfront of Ocean Avenue east of First Avenue is closed for the beach headquarters reconstruction. The borough will also stripe the parking spaces for the First, Second and Third Avenue parking lots. The lots will be off-limits during painting hours. Ocean Avenue: The southernmost blocks of Ocean Avenue will be the last to reopen in Belmar, but portions of Lake Como are closed for pipe construction there. In Belmar, Ocean Avenue is open from Avon through 17th Avenue. The boardwalk is closed until railings are installed. In Avon, the…
At least until a state pilot program comes to an end, there won't be any more red light cameras in Brick or anywhere else in the Garden State. The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced last week that no new locations would be added to the list of authorized red light camera intersections because there would not be sufficient time to gather useful data under the pilot program that is scheduled to end in December 2014. Brick was among the first municipalities in the state to participate in the program, which began in 2009 and has grown to include 76 intersections across the state, …
Members of the public are invited to share their views on how New Jersey's communities and economy can continue to grow.  Ocean County, Together North Jersey and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority want to hear what locals think about current conditions and where things are heading during a meeting on Thursday, April 11 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Toms River's Ocean County Library branch.  "This input will be used to develop the long-range plans that will shape the future of northern and central New Jersey," said Miriam Salerno, an outreach coordinator for the program, in a prepared…
Now that spring has returned to New Jersey the Department of Transportation is busy tackling pothole problems that have developed along their roadways.  Last week a crew was hard at work along the Freehold stretch of Route 33 using a machine appropriately known as the "Pothole Killer." After a winter full of freezes and thaws Garden State roads have taken a pounding and will now be fixed to make them safer for all motorists.  NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said crews will be hard at work now that warmer weather is in the forecast. "The investments we are making in major roadway resurfacing …
If you’re used to filling up your tank at the Monmouth service area of the Garden State Parkway, you’re going to have to alter your plans for the next couple of months, officials said. Sunoco, which operates gas stations on the parkway, has shut down the facility just north of Exit 98 in Wall while it upgrades the facility, officials said. The work is similar to that done at the Cheesequake, Atlantic City and Forked River service areas, said Tom Feeney, New Jersey Turnpike Authority spokesman. The work at the Monmouth service area is expected to be complete by mid-May, Feeney said, but until …
A gas main break in Manasquan created a heavy detour through Route 71 and Main Street Thursday morning. The gas main break temporarily closed state highway 71 in both directions south of Main Street, creating a traffic shift. The northbound traffic is using the southbound roadway. Southbound traffic was detoured through Manasquan. Police and utility crews are in place to direct traffic and complete repairs. Issues began after 6 a.m. Thursday at the major intersection. The repairs are forecast to last through 10:07 a.m. today, according to 511nj.org, the state traffic incident map.
As thousands flock to the watch and parade in the Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade today, expect traffic delays and road closures throughout Sunday. While the under-construction Ocean Avenue in Belmar has opened for the day, Main Street — the parade route — is closed. So is the road around Lake Como, Northern Boulevard, which serves as a staging area for bands, pipes and drums and other marchers. Be sure to budget extra time trying to navigate the Belmar, Lake Como area on parade day. Streetside parking is expected to be nearly impossible to find, and NJ Transit has added extra …

A bill that would ban the future construction of jughandles in New Jersey passed muster with a state Senate panel Monday, paving the way for its potential consideration before the entire body. The measure by state Sen. James Holzapfel (R-Ocean) would prohibit the planning, design or construction of any additional jughandles on roads or highways statewide. It passed the Senate Transportation Committee Monday. Holzapfel, in a statement issued after the committee vote, said the bill was inspired by projects on several state highways— such as Routes 1, 4 and 130—where issues of heavy congestion …
Ocean Avenue in Belmar will remain off limits for some time, Mayor Matt Doherty said, as construction crews drive pilings 20 feet into the ground to rebuild the destroyed boardwalk. Epic Construciton will be working weekdays starting at 7 a.m. to complete the work but the roadway will close seven days of the week as construction equipment and materials are stored there for this portion of the boardwalk rebuild. Doherty had hoped a discussion with the county — as Ocean Avenue is a county road — might reopen Ocean Avenue in one direction. Currently towns such as Long Branch have taken to making…

If you received a ticket from one of Brick Township's red light cameras prior to July 2012, you may eventually be owed a refund under a legal settlement struck Friday. But don't expect to be reimbursed anywhere near the $85 you had to pay to settle your own case against the camera. American Traffic Solutions, the vendor of Brick's red light cameras, along with 16 municipalities – including Brick – were sued earlier this year after the state shut down the cameras in those municipalities after finding that a different standard was applied to calculate the length of amber, or yellow, lights than…

The Route 71 bridge over the Shark River is now open. A detour that rerouted Route 71 traffic onto Route 35 in Belmar since Hurricane Sandy is over. State Department of Transportation officials announced the span between Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea, at the north end of Main Street in Belmar reopened to vehicular traffic. Repair work after the storm is complete "days ahead of schedule," said NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson in a news release today. “We are pleased to get this bridge back in service ahead of schedule because we understand its importance to residents, business owners and visitors…
As the Labor Day weekend winds down there are some delays on the roads in the Jersey Shore area, but not many as of 4 p.m. According to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, there are delays reported on the northbound side of Exit 91 reaching all the way to the Monmouth Service Area. That seven mile delay is being attributed to volume on the roadway.  There are also delays reported on the Parkway north south of exit 77 that stretches to Exit 81. The five mile stretch is also being impacted by volume as visitors return to their homes from the long weekend.  Also in the Ocean County area there is …
