UPDATE: Council votes for preliminary approval for second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m.
Point Beach council voted on Tuesday night for bars to close at midnight, two hours earlier than the current 2 a.m. closing time. Councilmembers Kristine Tooker, Bret Gordon and Michael Corbally voted for the earlier bar closing, while Councilmembers William Mayer, Tim Lurie and Stephen Reid voted against it. That left Mayor Vincent Barrella to break the tie, and he voted yes. The ordinance goes into effect on July 1. The council also voted for preliminary approval for a second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m., which is the current closing time. However, councilmembers agreed to postpone the deadline for bars to request a later closing time from the town. That deadline had been May 24 but was moved to …
Boardwalk still offering $800,000 over five years, despite state saying proposed bar ordinance "appears to be unlawful"
A Boardwalk offer to pay $800,000 over five years is "still on the table," despite that the state says a related town proposal "appears to be unlawful." Marilou Halvorsen, Director of Marketing for Jenkinson's Boardwalk, said late Tuesday afternoon that Jenkinson's and Martell's are still jointly offering the payment, despite that the state Department of Community Affairs is questioning the legality of a proposed ordinance that would compel bars to pay fees to stay open past midnight (see related story posted on top of home page). "But if they pass a 12 o'clock bar closing, I'm sure it won't be," Halvorsen said. "But our offer is still on the table because it's in everyone's best interest to come up with a resolution," she said. Now it …

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.
Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett, refused and left the interview according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

Fourth-annual 'Rock for Autism' benefit set for 5 p.m.
There is perhaps no better sign of the start of the summer season in Belmar as when D'Jais opens its doors for the first time of the year. And on Friday, May 4, the bar and cafe on Ocean Avenue plans to open up shop at 5 p.m. for the fourth-annual Rock for Autism, presented by the borough's First Aid Squad. For a $10 admission fee, guests will be privy to a free buffet and cash bar -- all in the name of supporting the Surfers Healing foundation for autism. Mayor Matt Doherty said he expects to be on-hand, and on Wednesday he encouraged his fellow governing body members to join the party. Tickets can be ordered by emailing fhines@belmarfirstaid.com
Expected to be up and running by mid-summer
The Belmar Planning Board on Tuesday unanimously approved an application from Chefs International, Inc., to build a miniature golf course and outdoor bar and restaurant on the Ninth Avenue Pier at the Marina, officials said. The Point Pleasant Beach-based company, which owns Jack Baker's Wharfside and Lobster Shanty, stepped in last month after plans between the borough and another developer for a $10 million project fell through. Robert Cooper, president and CEO of Chefs International, has said the proposed restaurant, being called "9th Ave. Pier," would be similar to the Patio Bar in Point Pleasant Beach, which the company also owns, offering "festival style" food, brick oven pizza, and a raw bar. Cooper, who pitched the project at a …

Two ordinances, one for midnight closing and one for bars to pay fees to stay open later, are carried until May 15 meeting
Ordinances calling for bars to stop serving alcohol two hours earlier and one allowing bars to pay fees to stay open later were both "carried," or postponed until the May 15 Point Beach Council meeting by the Point Beach Council on Tuesday night. The decision to "carry" was made at the request of an attorney for Jenkinson's to give boardwalk business owners and elected officials more time to meet privately to try to come up with a solution. The votes to carry both ordinances were cast by council members Bret Gordon, William Mayer, Tim Lurie and Stephen Reid. Council members Kristine Tooker and Michael Corbally voted against carrying both ordinances. Mayor Vincent Barrella did not vote, but spoke in favor of carrying the ordinances to allow…

Local restauranteur replaces international redeveloper
Negotiations between Belmar and developers for a $10 million marina project have fallen through, but it appears another local proprietor is ready to pick up at least some of the slack. Chefs International, Inc., the Point Pleasant Beach-based company that owns Jack Baker's Wharfside, Lobster Shanty and Wharfside Patio Bar, wants to build the miniature golf course and outdoor bar and restaurant on the Ninth Avenue Pier that international developer Hibernian had proposed earlier this year. Robert Cooper, president and CEO of Chefs International, said the proposed restaurant, being called "9th Ave. Pier," would be similar to the Patio Bar in Point Pleasant Beach, offering "festival style" food, brick oven pizza, and a raw bar. Cooper, who …
