Manasquan: Travel, Water Restrictions

County sewage pumps flooded during overnight storm

Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy and an initial review of the damage, Manasquan has enacted travel restrictions in several areas of town.

In addition, early Tuesday morning officials received word from the South Monmouth Regional Sewage Authority
(SMRSA) that their nine pump stations located throughout South Monmouth County are flooded and inaccessible, according to a borough release.

With the pump station down and inaccessible, sewerage cannot be received, causing backups in residential sewerage lines and homes.

"Please avoid using your water, sink, toilets and bathtubs as best as possible," the release says.

Once the flooding recedes crews will be able to access the pump stations and make them operable.

"Please do not tie the police department phone line or public works lines with questions regarding sewer backups," the release says.

Until SMRSA gains access, no municipality can address the issue.

The following traveling restrictions have been put into place:

East of the bridges to the beach:
No access allowed to this and the beach areas until it is deemed safe.  Manasquan emergency officials will be conducting a search and rescue mission and damage assessment.  Violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

East of the railroad to the bridges:
Limited access allowed to residents and property owners.  Emergency personnel will be staffed and will request proof of residency or property ownership.

All other areas:
Caution when accessing other areas of the borough.  Many areas are blocked and downloaded wires and trees are a hazzard

To correct this article, there are no water restrictions. Only flushing and sewage. - Joe DeIorio, Administrator/CFO

If you are looking to drive out, you'd better call police or check with them. Good luck!
