Squan Saves $30k on Road Improvements

Council amends bond ordinance for Blakey Ave. project

The Manasquan Borough Council at its Monday meeting introduced an amended bond ordinance that would cut $30,000 from the total cost of an upcoming road improvement project on Blakey Avenue and several other borough streets.

The council introduced the amended bond ordinance allocating $340,000 for a paving, curbing and sidewalk project on Blakey Avenue, Fisk Street, Clark Street and Church Street that was originally estimated to cost $370,000.

Last month the council awarded Mark Woszczak Contractors, Inc. a $370,000 contract for the project, of which the Blakey Avenue portion is to be funded partially by a $160,000 state Department of Transportation grant.

The amended bond ordinance would authorize $323,000 in negotiable bonds and a $17,000 down payment to fund the project. The borough does not expect to spend the entire sum since nearly half of the cost will be funded by the DOT grant.

Special assessments levied on property owners will also partially fund the construction of curbs, sidewalks and driveway aprons, the bond ordinance says.
