Drunken driving, a minor accident and active warrants among charges

An afternoon accident on Route 138 and Allenwood Road led to the arrest of a Howell man on drunken driving charges, police said.

Nicholas B. Dzielak, 25, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after the vehicle he was driving struck the rear of another vehicle stopped at the intersection’s traffic light around 5:29 p.m., Sgt. Michael Tozer said.

Wall Police arrested and charged four other people Sunday, Tozer said.

Keri M. Johnson, 46, of Glen Rock, Bergen County, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop on Belmar Boulevard near New Bedford Road around 3:39 p.m., Tozer said.

Catalina Londono, 28, of Bloomfield, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated around 4:23 p.m. following a traffic stop on Belmar Boulevard near the commuter parking lot of the Garden State Parkway. Patrolman Miles Shanklin was the arresting officer, Tozer said.

Arturo Gonzalez, 30, of Lakewood, was arrested and charged with warrants out of Brick Township and Lakewood Township following a traffic stop on 18th Avenue near Baileys Corner Road around 8:40 p.m. Gonzalez posted bail on both warrants and was released, Tozer said.

Christopher Cooper, 29, of the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop near J Street around 9:20 p.m., Tozer said.

St Patricks day has devolved into the celebration of alcoholics and alcoholism. Fat drunk and stupid on parade.

Slippery Slope - couldn't agree more. Marched with a Respect Life Group, behind an unknown group dressed in costume dancing to "push it good" and "look at that body". How does that represent anything having to do with St. Patrick or even Ireland??

I guess you missed the religious ceremony that day, along with the happy faces of the children, our Vietnam warriors, the police and firefighters and the many organizations that spend all year raising money for worthy causes - all marching to remind us of the good practiced in this world. You need an attitude adjustment.

That is one way to look at it. However, I had several friends and family members that marched in and attented yesterday's parade in a display of great pride in their Irish heritage. I would venture to say that there are 3 DWI arrests on any given summer weekend in Wall. So let's not rush to the racist stereotyping of St. Patrick's Day as "Fat drunk amd stupid on parade".

Tom, What part of any of the previous comments was in any way racist?

I will explain. The Irish faced intense racism for decades, particularly in the latter half of the 19th centruy. They were seen as a dirty people who talked funny, had an odd religion, drank excessively, and were overly violent. Over the years, Irish-Americans, like most immigrant groups in our country, have fought hard to overcome these stereotypes. It is one of the reasons that St. Patrick's Day is so widely celebrated in the United States; the day represents not just a pride in being of Irish descent, but also of having earned a place at the table as a resepctable part of American society. That is why police departments, fire departments, church organizations, teachers, political groups, etc. all proudly march in the Bemar St. Patrick's Day parade. And to paint that day as "Fat drunk and stupid on parade", plays on racist stereotypes that Irish-Americans have endured for years.

Tom, I'm well aware of the history of the Irish people in this country. I am Irish. I would also be willing to bet that a very large part of the crowd of "drunk and stupid" people at that parade are not Irish and are just looking for a good excuse to get "drunk and stupid". It would seem that you are the only one to bring up race.

How big an idiot do you have to be, to get drunk, then attempt to drive. There are trains, buses and limo services that will safely get you to and from this event. I'm of Irish descent and don't celebrate St. Patrick (who also happens to be my patron saint), by getting drunk and acting like a total moron. I have a lot more pride in heritage than that.

This may be a little off subject, but just think? If the jokes and comments directed at the Irish were said about the Blacks, the Jews, the Hispanics or the Muslims, there would be an outcry like we've never seen. Somehow, to laugh at the Irish is considered "funny". I DON'T agree, and for those that do, "Pogue Ma' Thoin".

it's a shame these people risk other peoples lives in additon to their own. The parade day is a great one for those people in the area and brings in a lot of revenue!

I full on celebrated sunday and instead of purchasing that last drink, i paid for a cab ride home.
