Second Bear Sighting Reported To Police
Bear reported to be on the property of a Route 138 motel
A bear sighting, the second such incident since October, was reported this weekend, police said Tuesday.
A witness reported seeing the bear around 9:50 p.m. Saturday on the property of the 38 Motel, on Route 138 just west of New Bedford Road, Sgt. Pete Lokerson said.
The same person also reported seeing the same bear with two cubs the night before, Lokerson said.
Police searched the area, but found no bear, Lokerson said.
The witness did not say the bear was aggressive, Lokerson said.
Lokerson should use common sense when encountering a bear.
“Remain calm and never approach the animal. Make the bear aware of your presence by talking or clapping, and always give it an escape route,’’ he said.
Garbage should be secured and kept away from bears, Lokerson said and any sightings, nuisance or damage caused by bears should be reported immediately to the Wall Township Police Department: (732) 449-4500.
For additional information on black bears, how to co-exist with them and how to reduce human-bear interaction please view information provided by the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Department website, Lokerson said.

am fearful for the welfare of these bears. Bears that come into areas previously uncommon to them usually meet untimely ends at the hand of misdirected, "well-intentioned" residents or law enforcement. Couple things to know; female bears weigh app 175lbs or less (these are NOT grizzlies!). They are mainly herbivores. Yes...a female will be fiercely protective of her cubs (arent we all?) but they are very, very shy and will avoid humans at all costs. There has NEVER been a fatal attack by a black bear in NJ. Hopefully they are just passing through on their way to a more remote area but if you should be fortunate enough to see them PLEASE DO NOT PANIC...it may lead to their death. Do not feed them or approach them...enjoy this little gift Wall Twp has been given and pray that they are able to move on safely.

A 175 pound bear will still tear you to pieces, if startled/threatened.
Please dont downplay how dangerous they can be.
