President Obama: Feds Stand By Hurricane-Ravaged Communities

President Obama and Gov. Christie toured areas impacted by Sandy on Wednesday.

The federal government stands by New Jersey as it suffers in the wake of Tropical Storm Sandy, President Obama said Wednesday afternoon while visiting Brigantine alongside Governor Christie.

Obama confirmed FEMA aid has already been approved for Atlantic County, and that restoration efforts will continue as long as needed.

"We will not forget," Obama said. "We will follow up to make sure you get the help you need.

There are 2,000 personnel from FEMA on the ground, Obama said.

"They are talking to communities so people know how they can get the help they need," Obama said. "The important thing to know is that people can immediately start registering for emergency assistance. Now that you're safe, it's very important you know there's help available to you now."

Residents can call 1-800-621-FEMA or visit http://disasterassistance.gov to register right now to immediately receive help.

"Our biggest priority is getting power back on," Obama said. "There are still big chunks of the state that don't have power. When people don't have power, they're disabled in all sorts of ways."

Obama said states that haven't been impacted by Sandy, and states as far west as California, have already pledged help for the state.

This was a concern among county and local officials prior to the storm. They were worried that because of the size of the storm and the number of areas that were to be impacted, each municipality and county would be on its own.

Obama said the focus currently is on New Jersey, New York, and parts of Connecticut, and that the government is monitoring snow in West Virginia.

"Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones. Because of good preparation, loss of life kept lower than it might have been."

He said federal and military assets may be used to help transport people once they get back to work. He made no mention of the tainted water in Atlantic City, or the possibility of reopening Brigantine, Longport and Margate, per a request from Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson.

"This is not going to get cleaned up overnight," Obama said. "We can promise the federal government will work as closely as possible with state and federal officials to get this done. I will not tolerate red-tape or bureaucracy in this matter."

He praised Christie's efforts.

"This is a federal, state and local effort," Obama said. "Gov. Christie has been responsive, aggressive in making sure the state got out in front of the storm, and I think people of New Jersey recognize he's put his heart and soul (into the recovery)."

"He has worked incredibly closely with me since even before the storm hit," Christie said. "I cannot thank the president enough for his concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state."

They were joined by Congressman Frank LoBiondo, Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, and Levinson on Wednesday.

"We have suffered losses," Christie said. "All that stuff can be replaced. You look to your right and left, at your son and daughter and that's the stuff you can't replace."

I noticed after Obama's speach was over , he turned and shook some hands but he and Christie nevershhok hands or looked at each other. Hmmmmm what's with that ? Myself, I think no love lost between them. As long as they work to get everyone through this TERRIBLE time, is good.

BS JIM.........When Obama's helicopter landed Christie was there and Obama 'immediately shock his hand' when on the ground. Even before coming on the scene Obama had spoken with Christie via telephone and gave him a 'special White House number to call whenever he, Christie, needed to get in touch with Obama. He did the same with all of governors of the affected states. THEREFORE, it seems you have not 'paid attention' adequately before shooting off your mouth.

It amazes me what people can miss looking at the same story. The President greeted the Governor with a hand shake and reassuring hand on his shoulder when he got off the plane. They immediately went to work. Does anything else matter? Please people, stop looking for evil between the exchanges of these two men. The country cannot afford this type of thinking from anyone.

Moronic ideations: I'm am so tired of people just saying anything without thinking. People have the right to express any opinion they hold, but please let it be based upon critical thinking, integrity and consideration for others. If what one has to say cannot further the conversation towards resolution, then one should also consider invoking one's right to remain SILENT.

In stark contrast to Bush 43 during Katrina, this POTUS gave orders that will actually save lives, put in man power and machinery to restore infrastructure, and got rid of the red tape bureaucracy, and promised long term aid. All this helps everyone's economy, bolsters hope in the face of adversity by giving a path toward the immediate future. Power, whether it is soft or hard, yields desired results when executed appropriately; thus the difference between 2005 and 2012.

Jgoodin-- Unfortunately, the power remains out in Matawan and Aberdeen. At the Matawan PD today, they tell me JCP&L continues to tell them just what the rest of us have been hearing-- that power could be out for many of us (I live in Matawan as well) for as long as 7 to 10 days since the first outages. We also hearing that one factor in the extended outages is the fact that the utilities must keep power off in a wider area in order to its crews to work safely on poles and lines in the field.

Sir I challenge you to think instead of hate. Obama chose to work as a community organizer, rejecting positions in ritzy law firms. This demonstrates his character, because he certainly was not doing it for the money. I know; I am a Social Worker. As someone has already stated here, "You can say this, and he'll still help you". And, I say it is because he is truly compassionate, not simply because he is the POTUS. You should be thanking God you are still alive, praying for the Governor, first responders and all those in authority instead of hating. Celebrate what you still have, do what you can for yourself and others, and am God for his help, because the best intentions of humanity will fail us at times.

This comment reflects an indifference to the facts based upon hysterical supposition. If NEW Jersey could do it alone, why did the Governor Christi request Federal assistance? That right there is your clue that the problem is too much for the state to handle alone. Money is not the only type of assistance being granted to the states effected by Sandy: equipment and manpower is also, and States have limited supply of both. Other states are helping out, and that still is not enough, so stop being short sighted. It's not just a local issue. It's a national issue since this disaster effects our national economy. Businesses lost on the east coast where about 63 million Americans reside, includes Democrats and Republicans as well as Independents such as myself, and this means currency lost for everyone. The quicker things get back to normal with the the aid of the Feds, the better off the national. GDP . It will take money to fix our rails, roads, homes and businesses. How do you think expansion began in this country? It took both the government and private sectors working together. For instance, Government provided land and other incentives for people to settle the West which gave businessmen opportunity.

Has anyone noticed that we have nothing going on with regard to traffic direction, control, etc., in Millburn? There are no police officers or crossing guards directing traffic and keeping traffic away from all of the downed trees and lines all over town. It took me over 40 minutes to travel from Kings to my home on haddonfield road this morning, because there was no traffic direction at all. I had to "guess" at which streets would end up as "dead end" because of trees or wires. I am told by a township manager of another town that FEMA picks up 75% of police and other emergency overtime since we have been declared a disaster area. Why not get some extra help out there to help us? I fully understand that there is a lot going on, but it seems that there is very little going on all over town in terms of cleanup, etc. I spent a good part of my day in Nutley today and the clean-up and emergency repairs going on on just one street in Nutley is more than we have in our entire town. In Belleville there are police officers, special police, crossing guards, and all kinds of emergency workers all over town, including at every intersection with damaged traffic lights. I urge our Mayor (who I think is great) to look into what is happening.

If you liberals blamed Katrina on Bush, then Obama is to blame for Sandy. Our hundreds of millions in stimulus money could have gone for infrastructure improvements to protect us from the impact of major storms. Instead it went to enrich bankers and insurance companies.

I wonder when Michelle is taking her next expensive vacation with the kids and her mother, the White House freeloader.

Bush wasn't blamed for the storm that was Katrina - what he was blamed for was his utter failure in bringing the necessary timely support and relief to the victims of Katrina. With numerous bodies floating in New Orleans and people begging for qualified federal help, who could forget Chuckle-Nut's comments to his FEMA director several days into that disaster, "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job", a person whose only previous work experience was running the Arabian Horse Association.

BTW, here's a question for today.....while Bill Clinton was busy campaigning for President Obama, where in the world was Chuckle-Nuts? He's at an exclusive invitation only conference in the Cayman Islands explaining how he and his fellow felons can shelter their assets in offshore accounts.

A true republican to the end.

We wouldn’t be in the Great Recession today if Bill Clinton and Robert Rubin hadn’t deregulated the financial industry. And Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke and Henry Paulson hadn’t let the housing bubble expand to the popping point. And if the Bush Administration had bailed out homeowners instead of just bankers. And Tim Geithner oversaw that the big banks and Wall Streeters were bailed out while the banks, without strings, refused loans and did little to nothing to bail out homeowners but instead foreclosed on America, while paying huge bonuses to themselves.

Jim, did you get that Republicans sandbagged moderates in their own Party in 2010?
Did you get that the republicans chose to put their "one term President" against Obama ahead of the national good, and for some Republicans it was because of his skin color more than his policies if we our to believe General Wilkerson, also a Republican? Did you notice that Bush's "Compassionate Conservatism" is no longer embraced by the Party? Jim did you read Paul's comment here on why we are really in this mess to begin with? Both Parties have been party to our current circumstance. The question remains what are Republicans going to do to work with moderates amongst them and liberals across the aisle in January to keep us from going off a fiscal cliff, regardless of who becomes POTUS?

Obama has done nothing to help the US economy in four years and Mitt Romney has. What else is there needed to know?

We have DEAD Boarder Patrol Agents, A Dead Ambassador and three other Americans in Benghazi and Obama has NOT ONE ANSWER in fact he is blocking information.

Mitt Romney is not our Commander In Chief! Obama Is! What else do we need to know about Obama before we elect him for a second rule?

Uh, Romney did great for the economy of China all of his Bain years to date as a shareholder, enriching his personal economy. He worked with Dems to balance the budget in Mass, because their State Constitution required it. Massachusetts was 48th in job creation while Romney was Governor, and the national high ranking of educational achievements occurred before he was Governor. He is a bright man, but he is also a dishonest man....a liar who defies the facts, and though he may be a good CFO AND CEO, he will make a lousy statesman who can get us into international woes.

I found it heartening that Christie is the kind of no nonsense politician who has his own point of view being a republican but isn't so much of an ideologue to intentionally put people at risk for the sake of putting down the other party. He's done it with Obama and he's done it with Mayor Zimmer in Hoboken. We're Americans first and this is how it's supposed to work. This country needs more real conservative Americans like him and less nutjobs like what we've seen a little more than a decade.

I think Obama & Christie are both putting the people first which is what they are elected to do. Romney is not about the people. Use common sense when you vote.
Give Obama another 4 and then you'll have Christie for the 8 after that. If by chance Romney wins you will see a terrible liar that tells the crowd in front of him what they want to hear... why would you want that kind of mind running the country?
If Romney wins, no shot at Christie being president for a long while... I'm not trying to convince anyone to vote for Obama either, he owns NJ electoral votes anyway.

I think it is great that the president and governor, in spite of idealogical differences, presented a united front devoid of political grandstanding, unlike alot of the posters like yourself here. But, in terms of New Orleans, while Bush was tone deaf on the Katrina mess, Nagin and Landrieu were just as, if not more, accountable and both lost their jobs. The rebuild of levees have held for the storms that have hit NO since 2005. These were built, sorry to tell you, under Bush. Notice, in New Orleans, no school buses in parking lots and a governor who is competent like to governors of NY NJ and Ct have made a difference. I applaud the president and know he is sincere, but having governors such as Cuomo, Christie and Molloy running our respective states has been the difference, not to mention Mayor Bloomberg..

Neither the president nor the governor can get the power back on in Hoboken. Have your eyes been closed when disasters have occurred in other parts of the country? Do you think NJ is special? I have no electricity either, but I'm smart enough to know that politicians are not electricians, nor are they linemen. I do not expect them to climb poles and rewire my neighborhood. If anyone heard Christie's press conference today you know what I mean -- his action, his empathy and his smarts and focus are totally inspiring, as well as President Obama's communication and attention to focusing resources. For all those who are using this disaster as leverage to drum up support for your candidate, you should be ashamed of yourself. You should be using your energy to help not disparage. The most amazing comments of all are the ones that are forecasting on how things are going to be gloomy in the coming days and weeks. Look for the light and stop cursing the darkness.
