UPDATE: 15-year-old Killed By NJ Transit Train

Accident happened around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday

 

1:00 a.m. update:

A 15-year-old Spring Lake Heights resident died Wednesday night he was struck by a northbound NJ Transit train shortly after 10 p.m., police said.

The name of the youth was not released early Thursday morning, pending notification of relatives.

But Lt. Gerald Preston of the Spring Lake Police Department confirmed that the youth was killed about 100 yards north of the Wall Road crossing. The Monmouth County Medical Examiner's Office earlier confirmed that a person was killed on the tracks, but did not release an age or home town of the victim.

By 1 a.m. the yellow police tape was coming down from the scene of the investigation that attracted numerous police and first aid companies from around the area.

12:40 a.m update:

Officials at the scene of an train accident in Spring Lake are confirming that a person was killed about 100 yards north of the Wall Road crossing with NJ Transit tracks.

Police and the Monmouth County Medical Examiner confirm that there was a person who died late Wednesday after being struck by a northbound NJ Transit train.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is heading up the investigation of a 10:15 p.m. incident involving a northbound NJ Transit train. Officials have been mum about the cause of the accident and decline to release the name or age of the victim.

11:50 update:

Red and blue lights swirl around the Wall Road crossing on the NJ Transit railroad tracks in Spring Lake Heights, interrupted only briefly by the white light coming from the handheld flashlights from swarms of police and investigators.

Just off the tracks, a woman weeps openly.

Authorities are still tight-lipped about the possibility that a person was struck on the tracks round 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, but the investigation is on full throttle.

11:30 update:

A northbound NJ Transit train is being slowly allowed past the scene of a possible fatal accident near the Wall Road crossing in Spring Lake Heights where a phalanx of emergency personnel are investigating.

An NJ Transit official on the scene declined to comment as officials are mum about what happened about 100 yards north of the tracks on the northbound side.

But about 10:15 p.m. emergency communications reported a fatal collision on the tracks. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is on the scene with numerous police, first aid and fire crews from around the area.

All trains had been stopped through the area prior to the northbound train let through on the southbound tracks around 11:30 p.m.

A phalanx of emergency personnel are swarming around Wall Road in Spring Lake Heights where a NJ Transit train has reportedly struck someone.

Police crews from Spring Lake, Spring Lake Heights, NJ Transit as well as first aid crews from around the area are on the scene at the Wall Road crossing of the NJ Transit tracks.

Emergency communications reported a person struck on the tracks at about 10:15 p.m.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation, which is centered about 100 yards north of the Wall Road crossing on the northbound side of the tracks.
