PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy Devastation In Point Beach

The boardwalk is a chewed-up mess; and the devastation has spread

The boardwalk that's been home to the fabled Jenkinson's train; the Easter-discounted childen's rides; the Rock-O-Plane and its spinning cars; and many other unique family attractions is still there.

But it's not what it was. Will it ever be again?

Mark Vetrini, a graduate of Point Pleasant Boro High School, Class of 1985, captured the images of the devastated, mile-long structure hours after the worst storm to strike the Jersey Shore pass through.

This boardwalk has survived fires, and other disasters, big and small. Now it's time to survive, perhaps, the worst thing that could possibly happen.

This makes me so sad. I spent my childhood at this boardwalk. My mother worked at the Penny Candy Counter in the Jenkinson's Pavilion for years and many an evening was spent walking this boardwalk or sitting in the rocking chairs overlooking the ocean. I hope with all my heart it is able to recover.

Yes Point Pleasant will come back, My sister and I visited for the first time 2 weekends ago. We had a great time, walked around and met some of the people who live there year round. Many were so friendly and answered questions about the town, where ever we went we felt welcomed. Walked the board walk at night and back to our hotel feeling safe. Met a group of young people who were polite and helpful. I have visited many beaches with my husband, adult children and other family members. Point Pleasant was like a breath of fresh air. People who live there have a lot to be proud of. God Bless all of you as you hopefully rebuild.

Does anybody know how Beacon lane is? Off of Ocean Ave and Michele lane I am concerned we can't get access yet and last I heard there was possible gas smells. Thank you if you know anything. It's across from Opdykes outdoor furniture

Does anyone know if the status of the animals in the aquarium? I know the building itself sustained water damage, but how about the animals? The Harbor Seals and penguins have been a staple for decades. Has anyone heard anything about that at all?? This just breaks my heart.

I'm also concerned about the well being of the penguins, fish, etc that live at the aquarium as well as the cats that lived under the boardwalk at Seaside Heights. There is so much devastation. My heart goes out to all that have been impacted by Sandy.

All doing fine at the aquarium. I didn't see the cats there when I bugged out. I hold out hope that the ladies who feed them caught them for the duration.

I heard that the people that worked at the aquarium stayed throughout the storm and that everything was okay there but I am not sure. How did the Windswept Motel do, I stay there every summer.

Sorry for the late reply, just saw this today...The Windswept Motel is open for business! We had damage, but no structural damage. We'll be 100% by Memorial Day weekend. Thank you for thinking of us.

Residents are now allowed to return to PPB but there's still a 7 pm to 7 am curfew in place. Wharfside appears fine from the outside, still standing with minimal evident damage.

I'm so concerned about PPB. I spent all my summers there in 40's and 50's at the corner of Randall and Homestead Ave. A photo of that house would be greatly appreciated if anyone is nearby. My mother and father met at Jenkinson's Pavilion. Mom was quite a bingo player up there.

The pier at Martells is gone. The building itself on the boardwalk is still there along with the first large bar in the back just past the stage area. Then it drops off to the ocean.

What about Jenkinson's Bar? I haven't been able to find any info on that. And I can't really tell from the photos the extent of the damage to the rides. Are they wiped out or just damaged?

I grew up in Point Pleasant in sunshine Harbor. The boardwalk was the place to go then in the 40 and 50s. My daughter still returns with my grandchildren. Even though we moved to Brick town. Saddens me to know about the old places that were so familiar and may never be the same. Pat Bacsenko

Does anyone know how Spikes Restaurant managed this Sandy Hurricane? My wife and I spent many trips out to Point Pleasant and enjoyed their hospitality.
It is so very sad to see the area damaged beyond belief. Our prayers go out to ALL those suffering from this horrific storm. Cannot believe the destruction. So many wonderful memories of this area. It's just beyond our scope of the hardship all are endearing. God Bless you ALL! It will be rebuilt, I am sure of it, but my God how much work and hardship to be confronted with.
