People took clothes apparently from a destroyed store on the broken Belmar Boardwalk.

BELMAR, NJ -- The first hurricane in recorded history to strike the Jersey Shore did the worst damage.

Beyond the billions of dollars in rebuilding costs, Hurricane Sandy destroyed the Jersey Shore's prominent icons.

The Belmar Boardwalk, known for its simplicity, its sunshines that spread across its surface, was one. Now it's gone.

But it will come back.

I hope and pray that the vintage Looft-Wurlitzer carousel on the Seaside Heights boardwalk still stands. It's priceless and awesome, and I enjoyed it as a child in the 1950s.
