New Jersey Transit is suspending some rail service and access links due to rapidly deteriorating weather conditions, the transportation organization announced Friday afternoon, Feb. 8.

Bus service in northern and central New Jersey, including all I-195 routes will be suspended as of 8 p.m. until further notice. This includes all routes that serve Port Authority Bus Terminal and George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal, all routes that operate via U.S. Route 9, and all northern local bus routes, according to NJ Transit.

However, bus service will continue in Atlantic, Cape MayCamden, Salem, Gloucester, Burlington, Mercer and Cumberland counties unless weather conditions change.

As far as train service is concerned, the Morris and Essex Lines (including Gladstone Branch), Montclair-Boonton Line and all Midtown Direct services will be suspended as of 8 p.m. The suspension continues through tomorrow, and it takes 12 hours to restore service once it has been suspended.

However, rail crews will be on standby at key locations to expedite the start of service after crews have completed inspections, any necessary repairs are complete, and conditions have been deemed safe for customers and employees, according to NJ Transit.

These lines were heavily hit by Sandy, and the step is being taken to avoid leaving passengers stranded in dangerous situations, NJ Transit said.

Access link service will be canceled beginning Friday afternoon, and continuing all day Saturday for the following areas: Region 4 (Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, and north Ocean counties), Region 5 (Essex, Union, Somerset and Morris counties) and Region 6 (Bergen, Hudson, Passaic and parts of Essex counties).

No new outbound trips will exit these areas, and return trips will take place as early as possible, according to NJ Transit.

Full service will continue to operate in Region 2 (Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties) and Region 3 (Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and south Ocean counties) unless conditions warrant otherwise.

Cross-wide system honoring remains in effect, and all NJ Transit owned and operated waiting rooms will remain open extended hours, including evenings and overnight, throughout the storm.
