A 40-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning when the motorcycle he was driving struck a guardrail on the Route 35 bridge, Belmar police said.

The man, identified by police Thursday as Roonieel Salles, of Neptune, was traveling southbound on the bridge when he lost control of the motorcycle and hit the guardrail, police said.

Salles, who was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at 2:47 a.m., police said.

Route 35 was closed until 5:40 a.m. The investigation into the accident is continuing, police said.

Services will be handled by the Francioni, Taylor & Lopez Funeral Home in Neptune, a representative said Thursday.

A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, July 7, at Holy Innocents Church, Highway 33 in Neptune, according to the obituary.

Riding a bike is not as easy as it looks. New bikers should be aware of this, but some still are not. A high rate of speed just complicates things. As a biker since I was 17, now 62, I can say God has protected one of the dumbest. I now ride with a much greater fear than I did when I was a kid. I do appreciate that most drivers today do not think I am a Hell's Angel and try to run me off the road. Most show a much better awareness and don't tail gate me just to get a better look at their face in my chrome. To all you fellow bikers out there, keep the rubber side down!
