DEBATE: Monmouth U Students Watch Presidential Candidates Duke It Out

Students say they enjoy town hall-style of debate

As they watched President Obama and Mitt Romney debate Tuesday, Monmouth University students cheered, booed and laughed at the answers and exchanges throughout the night.

The crowd of 107 students and professors came out to Monmouth's Wilson Hall Tuesday night to watch the second presidential debate. Most agreed that the second round was a more lively match than the first.

Students said they enjoyed the town hall-style debate and that it made for a more interesting night.

"It shows when they are talking to people directly," Monmouth University sophomore Dan Roman said. "It really shows who looks more presidential."

"I think there were a lot of reasonable and difficult questions," Monmouth University senior Steven Cregan said. "I thought it was funny how Romney got called out on getting his facts wrong and I think Obama did much better than the last time."

The candidates were asked questions on a variety of topics ranging from inequality in the workplace for women and tax rates to immigration and Libya.

Roman said he believes that both candidates did a good job.

"I think they both painted a clear picture on what direction they want the country to move in," Roman said.

The students were particularly interested when the candidates spoke about the lack of jobs for recent college graduates.

Romney said it has been hard for young people, and said he will create "good jobs again."

Obama said important to wants to build on 5 million jobs created in the private sector.

"The most important thing we can do is make sure that we’re creating jobs in this country. Not just jobs - good paying jobs," Obama said.

Romney countered by saying the unemployment rate has not changed since 2008.

Students also participated in the debate on Patch's Twitter feed in its Cover It Live chat, and posted their thoughts as each candidate gave their answers.

Those who responded on Twitter seemed to have clear favorites in this year's election and Roman said tonight's debate should allow undecided voters to make a decision.

"Nobody will be undecided after tonight," Roman said.

Romney, 2-0. Even after the moderator gave Obama 3 more minutes speaking time and she threw Obama a life line regarding his comment in the Rose garden. Obama never specifically said the Libya incident was an act of terrorism.
I love the last question. Both were asked to tell us about themselves. What misconceptions were out there about them. Romney told us more about himself, as requested. Obama went on a rant about Romney. Obama got stumped. Even he can't say anything good about himself.

Four things i noticed -
1. The plan Romney described about a tax deduction amount that would be equal for everyone and taxpayers would have a choice in what deductions they wanted to apply to the amount. This was a good sensible idea.
2. Crowley butting in on the Libya question. Because she was wrong - or as they say 'misspoke' - about what the president said the next day about Libya, and Romney was right. The facts on Libya will support what Romney said. Will she correct herself?
3. Romney had 'Hofstra information' - he knew what gas prices were in Nassau county in '08 - that was good. And the presidents logic about why gas is twice what it was in '08 - it was $1.87 because we were in a financial meltdown and now that we are in recovery it is $4 a gallon? What???? Isnt it supposed to work the other way around.
4. Glad to see Romney hit back on the personal pension information. I am sick of the covet-my-neighbors-goods crowd who knock Romney or anyone because he is rich. The Obamas are rich too. Before he was president Obama was making a six figure income and his wife had a job that paid almost 400,000 a year. People like that have very nice pension plans that are managed by financial managers who invest it where there is the best return because that is their job - hard for the president to hit Romney for having part of his plan invested in China when he does too.

Crowley did, indeed, correct herself not long after the debate when Anderson Cooper threw her under the bus and stated she was wrong.

Also noted that Crowley cut Romney off as soon as he mentioned Fast & Furious.

IMO, Crowley's bias was obvious.

Point 1. The plan Romney mentioned was only an idea, I believe he said "something like" which to me sounded like an off the cuff idea to answer a question.

Point 3. According to the transcript of Obama's remarks he said:
"The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack. We're working with the government of Libya to secure our diplomats."

" No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for."

I do not know what Romney's point is by continuing to bring this up; there were obviously some mistakes made, and hopefully our security will be better going forward.

I feel Romney is making political fodder over this tradgey, but of course, it's easy to be a Monday morning quaterback,

I wonder if he would have done anything different based on what his top advisors were tellling him at the time; but it sure is easy to make the important calls in hindsight.

I also find it offensive to the families of those brave American's and to our nation to keep bringing it up for political purposes.

Seriously, Ocean County? Of course it's an idea, until it's implemented. Haven't heard a "plan" from Obama on how he's going to turn the economy around either. At least Romney has an "idea".

As far as the Libya debacle, it is unmistakenly obvious that the President lied, the Vice President lied. Clinton takes responsibility right before the debate. Coincidence? I think not. His attempt to cover this up failed. The American people are not stupid. Shooting terrorists from drones does not make Obama a leader on foreign policy. Yes, Bin Laden is dead. He gets kudos for that. In the same respect, he screwed up in Libya. Instead of taking responsibility for it immediately, he tried to cover it up.

Romney/Ryan slimy, arrogant and smug? Lying pieces of garbage? What the heck did Obama/Biden do when they told the American people for weeks the attack in Libya was due to a video?

Obama had 4 years to fix the economy, or at least make a clear indication that things are changing for the better. That did NOT happen! Quit the tired "it's Bush's fault" line. It's old and way overused. Time to take responsibility.

Another 4 years of Obama and this country is done. If that happens, something tells me you will still be crying it's someone elses fault. You may want to start preparing yourself, because it looks like Romney may well indeed be your next president.

Could someone please tell me what great plan that Romney has to create jobs and reduce the debt, the math does not add up, unless he has secret plan to let the middle class pay for it? I have listened to three debate now, and still cannot figure out what is Romney's plan? He keeps talking about jobs, but what are the specifics on how he intends to do that? And what loopholes he intend to eliminate, yeah I know, he wants to charge everyone the air that we breathe, since we are mostly made up of none paying, lazy bums! Romney is non presidential to me, he is why we are in this situation now, greed , greed and more greed solves nothing.

why is Romney being held to a higher standard than Obama was 4 yrs ago regarding the "secret" plans for the economy. Obama never gave any details, only kept repeating the same thing redistribution of wealth and using a scapel to cut out unnecessary items from the budget. Obama never presented the public w/ any plans.

What is Obama's plan to reduce the debt, create jobs and help the middle class - be specific because over the past 4 years, we haven't seen anything. His own budget submission grows the debt to $25 Trillion and costs more jobs and borrowing from china.

In four years, 15 million more are on food stamps - an unbelieveable 45 million Americans, gas and food prices have gone up, healthcare has gone up, 25 million are unemployed, more Government employees make more than 100k than ever before, the debt has doubled, annual budget deficits are $1.5 trillion a year, billions lost and jobs lost on failed green energy jobs (but Al GORE got rich off them), billions lost on owning GM (Ford didn't even need a bailout - BUY FORD)

Obama made promise after promise to get elected and then failed! How can we trust a man with a record of lies, failures and no specific plans?

Remember this - watch what they do, not what they say.

Obama hasn't done anything he said he would.

I too, have listened to three debates. I CAN figure out Obama's plan. It's the same plan and it doesn't work. Not willing to see Hope & Change move on to Hope & Pray. Time to move on and give someone else a chance at fixing this. Someone who knows a thing or do about building business. I don't care if the rich get richer, as long as jobs are created and people can support themselves and their families.

Eleanor

Energy brings jobs. Look at North Dakota that is profiting from pipeline jobs. The unemployment rate is in the very low single digits and they have no state income tax and the state has a surplus. Romney's plan to expand domestic energy exploration will not only bring jobs connected to that, but manufacturing is powered by energy. When energy is scarce, over regulated or limited, manufacturers go to countries where there is more, cheaper or less regulated energy.
Obamacare has a direct effect on hiring. Burden employers with costs that are directly related to the number of employees they have and they will look to trim their work force. Once they have that work force down to the bone the next option will be to increase the cost of whatever they produce or to take their operation overseas where it is cheaper.
Expand the tax base - and yes, this means insuring that the 40% (or more) who pay NO federal income tax pay up. There is no reason that people who file tax forms every year have to carry those who ARE non paying, lazy, cheap tax evaders.

Obama never answered a question with information that the person asked. Crowley gave him more opportunity to speak and backed him up when he said that he called Libya a terrist attach, which he didn't. When asked what are people's misconceptions about him, he went into a poltical rant. He also sat in the back ground when Romney was speaking and shouted out that he was wrong. When you don't have the facts the back up your record, you attack your opponent.

Obviously, nothing said on forums such as these will persuade one person to change their thoughts...however, America needs jobs...period. Obama had 4 years to try and create jobs. He has failed. Although I don't agree with Romney on everything, he is a business man and knows what it takes for small businesses to succeed. How do you think he made his millions?...by investing and mentoring small businesses that became very successful. (ie. Staples).

His tax plan for small business is great. Right now there is uncertainty for small business. We don't know if we will be taxed at the current rate or if Obama is going to raise taxes by letting the Bush era tax cuts expire. If I'm a small business owner, I'm not going to spend any profit that I may have made until I know if I'm going to have enough money to pay my taxes. Romney wants to lower tax rates for small business. If they have more money, they will invest in their companies and in turn, hire more people. Those people will get off unemployment and pay taxes again.

As for gas prices, I don't think it was wise that Romney mentioned about $1.86 per gallon four years ago. Obama was right...gas was around $3.50 and then the recession hit and that's why gas prices went down.

Jim,.....I'm not sure that Obama "has failed". What most folks fail to realize is that our nation endured the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression, and you simply cannot turn that large a ship around in a few years. The first priority was the stabilize the economy, then rebuild it, which is still in process.

Could we have done better; sure. But I'm not positive anyone else could have done better. Don't forget, these decisions wern't made in a vacuum, or by the President only; many of the nations top business minds and government leaders helped formulate the road to recovery.

As for gas prices, please check out this chart: http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx

Yes, Romney quoted a a low price in 08, but Obama appeared to be correct in that it was due to the down turn. If you look at the chart you will see that gas was about $3/gal in Jan 08, and peaked around $4.12 in Aug 08, which only goes to show that these guys can try to put a positive spin on anything, so you can't run with everything you hear; you need to do your homework to get to the truth.

Vampires, mummies the Tea Party, and the Holy Ghost, these are the things that frighten me the most! Today’s Republican Party is not the same republican party of Ronald Regan or even George Bush! In the contrary today’s Republican Party has been (for lack of a better word) highjacked by an extreme right wing radical element we refer to as the “Tea Party.” If Mitt Romney is elected these people will alter your life in a way you never thought imaginable. For example they want to replace Medicare with a voucher system, privatize Social Security, repeal National Health Insurance and eliminate your home property tax deduction while giving the wealthy 5% more tax cuts. The choice is yours on Election Day, Vote reason NOT color because, If you are working class or a female, Romney will throw you under the bus!
