Gov. Christie: Power Restoration a Top Priority in Days Ahead
New Jersey under mandatory water-usage restriction as many utilities make use of generator power.
Getting New Jersey back to normal after Hurricane Sandy is Gov. Chris Christie’s top priority, he said Wednesday night. Restoring power to the 2 million households in the dark will be part of that effort in the days ahead.
Christie said he has been in contact with other governors who will urge their utility companies to send crews to New Jersey to help restore the damaged electrical grid.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has pledged over 100 generators and diesel fuel to the state, which will be distributed to water treatment facilities, hospitals, and other sectors where they are needed for the greatest public good, according to Christie.
In addition, the governor ordered licensing requirements waived to allow merchants to more easily purchase gasoline and diesel fuel from out of state. Diesel, especially, has been in short supply, and it is needed to fuel the high-powered generators used by the water treatment plants, Christie noted.
With water utilities still on generator power, Christie has put the state under mandatory water-usage restrictions.
At least one area of New Jersey’s infrastructure has nearly returned to normal: 95 percent of state roadways have reopened, according to the governor. Of the 463 state road closures made during and after the storm, only 20 remain unresolved. The state will assist county and local authorities with clearing their blocked roadways once state roads are open.
Residents who sustained property damage during the storm should begin their own process of rebuilding and returning to normal by registering with FEMA. Christie advised New Jerseyans interested in filing for assistance to call 800-621-FEMA.

As glad as I am that they are focusing on water distribution, hospitals and those places for the greatest public good, I hope that they also will be focusing returning power to the senior citizen communities. The weather is getting colder, and they get chilled to the bone too easily and have a hard time warming up. Thank you for listening :)

There could have been upgrades made to the infrastructure over the years to prevent the amount of damage that occurred. For example, the electrical substation in Morristown has never been moved to higher ground. They have to sandbag it to prevent flooding from the river. Complete mismanagement for years from the governor's office on down.

Every resident in New Jersey is taxed $10,000 per for FEMA
it's OUR hard earned money used for political pandering by both
parties ... when will if ever end ? .. country needs a sound third
party along with the out dated two party system ...
not much of a choice especially with a failed prez running again
on what record ??? LIER PANTS ON FIRE???

That's about as ignorant a comment as I've read during this entire crisis. FEMA has been doing good work every since it was fixed after the Katrina mess.

Thank you for taking these comments. I hope the mayors if each town are interacting with elected officials to demand that the utilities provide updates to its customers re: time
frame for restored service. There simply is no excuse
for the incredible absence Of this critical information.
We all need to have one voice that gets the word to
the utilities that we are desperate for specifics. Updating their website daily would be a good start! It's getting frigid
at nite , especially for our seniors!
Thank You! If anyone has specifics please provide the
info!

I realize that Hurricane Sandy delivered a massive destructive path, however, as I am sure each devastated community is concerned regarding a time frame for power to be restored. My initial thought that PSE&G advising Livingston residents that the earliest to expect power is November 5th is a bit too long . Please update with any information that you hear otherwise ! Thank You !

Nov 5th is a blanket response. Every situation is different. The neighborhood behind us got their power on October 30th , while we still wait because our neighborhood is far worse. Remember, this is a minor inconvenience earn seeing total devastation only miles away. Please take a moment and be thankful.

We need information now! There is no excuse for not being able to get information. After this nightmare, we need to begin strengthening the infrastructure- bury electrical lines.. Where is the coordinated effort to help all residents of New Jersey?

I agree with Ann Franklin ! We are now going into Day 3.
Have you checked the utility customer service page.
Be patient .....we continue to assess the situation.
It is not acceptable , where are the Mayors , elected officials etc.????? Please call the utility customer service and demand answers , perhaps this will help! It's getting cold at night and no rooms available at any hotels so far......

Wow, would you all like some cheese with your whine? This was an unprecedented disaster, with a magnitude never seen before. Stop crying and fend for yourselves. Be prepared and stop relying on others to make you comfortable. Stop being helpless. I think it is amusing that people talk of the 'failed' President and socialism but the first time a disaster happens and the gov't is slow in resonding they are the first to cry. Shut up already and be patient and help yourselves and stop being helpless.

It was just announced that in the aftermath of the storm Governor Christie is going to extend the election by one day so people will be able to vote on Wednesday, November 7th as well. And to eliminate the expected lines, he will ask those registered as Republicans to vote on Tuesday, November 6th and those registered as Democrats to vote on Wednesday, November 7th. Independent voters can vote on any of the two days.

This is nothing new; Republicans have been spreading false information like this in minority neighborhoods the last three elections (four if you count this one). It's the only way they know to win. They are masters of projection. Whatever they accuse liberals of, that's what they themselves are doing.

Have you heard if any arrangements will be made for people in LBI and like places who might not be able to get home until Wednesday to vote elsewhere? I have a client from there that I just spoke to and she cannot seem to get any information about where she can vote if she cannot get back on LBI in time.

If Gov Christie says he is helping, I would trust his word over yours. We are talking about a Republican who has been consistently blasting Obama now saying he is doing a great job. Don't let your partisanship blind your judgement of reality. Why aren't you outraged about Romney dressing up his campaign rally as a "storm relief rally"?

THere are most certainly power crews from all over ! We have crews from Texas and Iowa helping out in our town. If you have internet - quit complaining - people being housed in our area hotels and shelters have lost everything. NJ has never had to deal with something of this magnitude... quit complaining about being inconvenienced...if you have 4 walls and a roof - you are lucky !

I so appreciate the camaraderie of some that seek solutions for the betterment of most. I am dismayed by the comments that appear self-serving and agenda-driven. In this time of crisis for the eastern US, it breaks my heart to see folks invest so much negative energy when we, the commenters, are alive and able to comment. As citizens of the US, could not more effort be directed towards working together as "us," enabling some to engage in common courtesy and to invest the same energy in helping and supporting each other. I am sorry I was a witness to such poor behavior. For those that believe in the power of us, please don't give up.

I for one, wish everyone would stop being so self-centered. After Irene, my family and I had to live in a hotel for 2 months! Having no power for a week or 2? I'll take it! You people need to realize, there are only so many workers and equipment available to fix this horrendous situation. They are doing all they can as fast as they can...if you see PSE&G trucks...be happy knowing that they are out there working!!

Stopped by Paneras for lunch today with my kid to eat and charge cells and a laptop for awhile. The place was jam packed with people camping out and hogging power. We finally found a table after stalking some area and plugged in. Wifi login read "Please be considerate and limit your time to 30 mins". My 9 year old set a reminder on my cell.
Then the lady next to me laughed and said she'd been in her spot charging her stuff and using her laptop for the past 4 1/2 hours. Nice, huh?

We live in 55+ community in Berkely Twsp. We've been w/out power since Monday & have been told we prolly won't have power until 11/14 or later. There's so many elderly here w/ walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen, inhalers, etc. been getting very cold at night and shelters are already over packed. I understand people have lost their homes but if power isn't restored soon, many elderly are going to lose their lives. Most people who lost their homes have been put up in heated shelters & hotels with room service. Now all u people that think we're selfish b/ c we do t have power can go f#c% yourselves. We don't want power to watch tv we need power to stay warm and stay alive.
