One person is dead after a NJTransit train collided with a motor vehicle late Saturday night in Spring Lake.

The accident occurred near 10 p.m. at the North Jersey Coastline crossing at Monmouth Avenue in the borough.

According to Police Chief Edward Kerr and Lieutenant Gerald Preston of the Spring Lake Police Department, the train was traveling from the Manasquan Station toward Spring Lake Station when it struck a black Honda CR-V.

Preston explained that witnesses reported the railroad gates were functioning properly and were down, signaling an approaching train, when the CR-V driver apparently maneuvered around them and onto the tracks, where the collision occurred.

Officials reported that the driver of the vehicle was dead on arrival, but declined to offer any further information about the deceased pending notification of family and further investigation. The driver was alone in the vehicle.

The incident comes just days after a two-car collision at the intersection of First and Passaic avenues left a vehicle overturned.

Last Friday, a 17-year-old Long Branch resident was struck and killed by an NJ Transit train near Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch. Days later, a 15-year-old Long Branch boy was injured when he was struck by a train while walking on NJ Transit tracks near Long Branch's Cedar Avenue.
