Collection Drive for David Ivins Friday at Belmar Plaza
High school, college students holding drive from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Ninth Avenue and Main Street
Some local high school and college kids will hold a collection drive for David Ivins from 3 to 4:30 p.m. today at the Pyanoe Plaza in Belmar, authorities said.
Belmar Police Chief Thomas Palmisano said the drive will be set up at Ninth Avenue and Main Street, where volunteers will accept food, water, clothing and monetary donations.
The borough is also collecting donations at Borough Hall, 601 Main St., Belmar, to help provide Ivins with food, clothing and housing after Jan. 2 — when his free stay at the Belmar Inn is over.
Monetary donations will be redirected to the Wall-based charity, Wall Helps Its People, while food, water and clothing are being kept at the borough police station, Palmisano said.
The borough will accept any donations, but most people are giving money. No amount is too small, Belmar Mayor Matthew Doherty has said.
There is also a Facebook page set up and dedicated to helping Ivins. Access it here.
Anyone interested in making a monetary donation can mail it to:
WHIP
P.O.Box 1214
Wall, NJ 07719
The organization will not accept clothing or food donations. All money received will be used to provide food, clothing, shelter and other necessities, Wall Township Police officials have said.
Please include a note indicating where you would like your donation to be directed using either "David Ivins'' or "Assault Victim'' the memo line of the check, police have said.
